These scripts are designed to automate taking a server out of a DAG to allow an administrator to patch them and then reintroduce the newly upgraded server back into the DAG . You can use these scripts or amend them to meet your operational needs, or write your own version! Just be sure to test them so that you understand how the scripts work before you depend on them for actual maintenance .

System shutdowns
The Exchange 2007 high availability features are not integrated with Windows Server 2003 shutdown code . Microsoft released Exchange 2007 after Windows Server 2003 so there was no opportunity to integrate the requirements of Exchange log replication into the Windows shutdown . In other words, if you shut down an Exchange 2007 server that is part of a CCR cluster, the Exchange Information Store process is shut down without taking any steps to gracefully transition work to a assive p member of the cluster . Ideally, an administrator would transfer work to the passive member of the cluster before shutting anything down, but if he forgot, users would experience an interruption of service in the time required to bring the passive copy online . Exchange 2010 is different, as it was released well after Windows Server 2008 and the work could be done to create a more elegant shutdown process for servers that operate within a DAG . When you shut down a server that hosts databases with copies on other servers in the DAG, Exchange will attempt to transfer the work to another server before allowing the shutdown to proceed . This approach allows users to continue working, assuming that the databases can be transitioned to another server .
Datacenter Activation Coordination
Some DAGs will be deployed across datacenters in multiple sites. These environments create a specific problem when catastrophic hardware failures occur that knock several servers out across multiple datacenters. Normally, when multiple servers in a DAG are affected, the DAG stays offline until the majority of the servers are restored to good health and come online again and the cluster is able to establish a quorum. At this point, Active Manager attempts to restart DAG operations and mount databases to recover from the failure.
Datacenter Activation Coordination
If all goes well, the databases will come back online and all the servers will be able to communicate with each other. However, if communications between the datacenters are not available, it is possible to provoke a condition known as split brain syndrome because the DAG members will not be able to receive heartbeat signals from the other members. You can think of split brain syndrome as having two parts of a cluster that can t talk to each other; both consider themselves to be authoritative for the cluster, or, in this case, the DAG. If split brain syndrome is allowed to persist, you could end up in a situation where copies of the same databases are activated on servers in two different datacenters and both start to provide service to users. It s obvious what a mess this could cause. To avoid this problem, you can configure a DAG to use a Datacenter Activation Protocol (DAP) to achieve a state called Datacenter Activation Coordination (DAC). The original intention was that DAC would be used for situations in which there are three or more members in a DAG that spans multiple datacenters. Microsoft tuned DAP in Exchange 2010 SP1 to support two-server DAGs. This is a supported configuration, albeit likely to be unusual, only deployed by small organizations that want to achieve high availability using a minimum number of servers. When a DAG includes enough servers to allow it to be configured to use DAP, Active Manager maintains an in-memory flag (called the DACP bit) to inform the DAG whether it can mount local databases on the server. When Active Manager starts on a server, the bit is set to 0, meaning that Exchange cannot mount local databases. Active Manager then communicates with Active Manager running on the other members of the DAG to determine to what value their DACP flag is set. If any server responds with a DACP value of 1, it means that local mounts are possible and the server where Active Manager is starting changes its DACP bit to 1 and proceeds to mount its databases. When a DAG has only two members, it uses the boot time of the FSW server as the DACP bit. Active Manager periodically reads and saves this value to be able to use it for arbitration purposes. Because the DACP bit from the FSW is nonzero, the first server starting up in the DAG will be able to mount its databases if the FSW is available. You configure DAP for a DAG by using the Set-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup cmdlet to set the DatacenterActivationMode property. The default is that DAP is off and this value should be left unless you have good reason to change it.
