Client Access Server (CAS) is possibly the most misunderstood server role in Exchange Server 2010, perhaps because it is essentially a black box that processes connections coming in from clients and sends those connections on to mailbox servers to permit client access to data. It s very different from a mailbox server, where you can almost visualize the flow of messages and exert great control over databases through Exchange Management Console (EMC) and Exchange Management Shell (EMS). It s also different from hub transport servers, where you can monitor the progress of messages through queues and examine message tracking logs to identify every step that occurs as a message is processed. The CAS doesn t include a management interface to depict a graphical representation of the connections that pass through. The lack of feedback about server functions often makes CAS processing difficult to understand. Even so, the CAS is right at the center of Exchange, and it is a critical server role to appreciate.

There are many white papers available from Microsoft and other parties that provide detailed guidance about how to handle CAS placement and configuration in different scenarios . For example, a particularly good blog post is available at http://msexchangeteam.com /archive/2009/11/20/453272.aspx, which describes how to approach the transition of an existing Exchange deployment to introduce Exchange 2010 CAS servers .

It is not my intention to walk through multiple scenarios in this chapter. Instead, I want to look at the basic technology in the CAS and how it serves the role laid out for it within an Exchange organization.
