Microsoft introduced the CAS server role in Exchange 2007 to begin the process of moving the responsibility for client connections away from the Store. This was part of the effort to decompose Exchange into a set of server roles that can be individually deployed and managed. The CAS is designed to handle three different kinds of traffic:

External connections from Internet clients: Traffic that flows into an organization generated by clients using different protocols, including Outlook Anywhere, Outlook Web App (OWA), Internet Message Access Protocol version 4 (IMAP4), Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), and ActiveSync clients, as well as clients that use Exchange Web Services (EWS), such as the latest version of Microsoft Entourage and Outlook for Mac. Internal connections from intranet clients: Traffic from Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) and other clients. Proxied connections from other CAS servers, or traffic redirected by one CAS to another: For example, from a CAS server in one Active Directory site to a CAS server in another site, or when a CAS server does not run the right Exchange version required to access a user s mailbox (this occurs when traffic comes into an Exchange 2010 CAS and needs to go to an Exchange 2007 CAS to access a mailbox on an Exchange 2007 server).

Table 11-1 lists the services that are provided by the CAS server role. Some of these services support access to Exchange through different client protocols, and some deliver significant functionality that improves the client experience. Two are full-fledged applications that serve the needs of users (OWA) and administrators (Exchange Control Panel [ECP]).

Exchange Control Panel (ECP) Web application that provides a browser interface to Exchange administration options.
The CAS role
Exchange Web Services (EWS) Provides an Extensible Markup Language/Simple Object Access Protocol (XML/SOAP) interface to Exchange services. IMAP4 MailTips Outlook Anywhere Supports IMAP4 protocol access to Exchange mailboxes. Generates warnings based on the header contents of new messages to help users avoid mistakes such as participating in a Reply All mail storm. Enables Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, and Outlook 2010 clients to connect to Exchange from the Internet using remote procedure calls (RPCs) wrapped in HTTPS. Web application that provides a browser-based client for Exchange mailbox and calendar functionality. Supports POP3 protocol access to Exchange mailboxes. Provides MAPI access to Exchange mailboxes.
Outlook Web App POP3 RPC Client Access
The single point of contact
The biggest change in the Exchange 2010 CAS is its evolution to become a single point of contact for all connections (except for public folders) through an overhaul of how Exchange deals with MAPI client connections . The Exchange 2007 CAS handles client connections for IMAP , POP3, ActiveSync, OWA, and Outlook Anywhere . It does not handle MAPI connections from Outlook clients; these still go directly to the Store process running on mailbox servers .
Exchange 2010 expands the work of the CAS by completing the relocation of client connections from the Store and provides a new MAPI endpoint to which clients can connect before being proxied by the RPC Client Access (RCA) layer to the mailbox database that hosts the target mailbox. This change is a fundamental part of breaking the link between mailbox and server that allows Exchange 2010 to introduce mailbox database mobility between servers. The Autodiscover feature provides the necessary magic to allow Outlook clients to continue to locate their mailboxes after the transition to Exchange 2010. Transferring the MAPI endpoint from mailbox servers to the CAS means that the Exchange 2010 version of the CAS handles more workload than ever before and that the CAS becomes even more essential to the overall health of an Exchange infrastructure. MAPI connections to public folder servers from Outlook are not handled by the CAS and continue to go directly from client to server.
