archive if this is available to a mailbox. Autodiscover is also version aware, so it understands what has to be returned to clients for Exchange 2007 mailboxes and doesn t confuse them with the increased detail provided to clients that wish to connect to Exchange 2010. It s a good idea to turn on Outlook logging to collect log files for successful connections under various conditions (internal and Internet) to provide you with a baseline. You can compare these files to log files created for unsuccessful connections to get some idea of where the problems might lie. This technique might not solve your connection problem, but it can certainly give you some insight. The Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer ( 17, The Exchange Toolbox ) is another valuable tool that helps administrators track down problems when Autodiscover and AutoConfiguration don t work as expected. Outlook Anywhere and Autodiscover are two of the tests supported by the Connectivity Analyzer. All you need to provide is a valid email address and account password, and the Analyzer will run tests to determine whether it can connect (with Outlook Anywhere) or configure a profile using AutoConfiguration, and report its results. You can also select the Outlook icon from the system tray and use the Ctrl+right-click combination to expose the current connection settings used by Outlook. This will give you information such as the servers to which Outlook is currently connected; for example, the CAS server and perhaps a mailbox server if you access public folders. This information is often requested by support personnel when they debug connectivity problems.

Sometimes you need to override the Autodiscover process and provide exact guidance to Outlook so that it knows where to find Exchange services. Let s say that you want to move accounts from an old resource forest running Exchange 2007 into a new forest where Exchange 2010 is present. To prepare for the migration, you create new mail-enabled accounts for Exchange 2010 in the new forest that you ll eventually use as the target for move requests when the users are ready to migrate. The client computers running Outlook are also installed into the new forest. However, some mailboxes remain on Exchange 2007 running in the resource forest. The problem is that when Outlook runs Autodiscover, it automatically looks in the new forest and discovers the new mail-enabled account and attempts to use that rather than Exchange 2007. We therefore need to redirect Outlook and tell it to use Exchange 2007 and ignore Exchange 2010 until the mailboxes are moved. This can be done in three steps:

The XML file is pretty straightforward. The following code sample illustrates the information that you need to include. The underlined text provides the direction to Outlook, so it needs to include the URL to the Autodiscover that you want Outlook to use.
< xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" > <Autodiscover xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/exchange/autodiscover /responseschema/2006"> <Response xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/exchange/autodiscover/outlook /responseschema/2006a"> <Account> <AccountType>email</AccountType> <Action>redirectUrl</Action> <RedirectUrl>https://autodiscover.oldex2007.com/autodiscover /autodiscover.xml</RedirectUrl> </Account> </Response> </Autodiscover>
You should place the XML file in a location where clients can access it. For Outlook 2007, create a string entry in the registry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook \Autodiscover\namespace and enter the full file name there (including the server name, if you locate the file on a file server). The same approach is taken for Outlook 2010, which uses a registry entry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Autodiscover \namespace. In both cases, namespace refers to the domain for which you are redirecting connections, so a fully formed value is something like this:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Autodiscover\oldex2007.com
Finally, we have to instruct Outlook to look for the XML file, read in its contents, and use the instructions found there. This is done with another registry entry. For Outlook 2007, create a new DWORD value at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook \Autodiscover\PreferLocalXML; for Outlook 2010, the value is at HKCU\Software\Microsoft \Office\14.0\Outlook\Autodiscover\PreferLocalXML. In both cases, you set the value to 1 (one) to force Outlook to use the local XML file rather than attempting to use networkbased Autodiscover. Of course, this method of configuring Autodiscover requires you to push the registry changes out to all the client computers that need to be updated to use a static Autodiscover configuration. Active Directory Group Policies or another mechanism can be used for this purpose.
