Exchange 2003: Turn on Integrated Windows Authentication on the ActiveSync directory on the Exchange 2003 BE servers to ensure that the authenticated connections passing through Exchange 2010 CAS are handled correctly. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937031 for the steps to perform this action.

Update SSL certificates Exchange 2003/2007: The SSL certificates used to secure client connections will not contain the new legacy namespace. Arrange with your certificate vendor for updated certificates and install them on the CAS and FE servers. Reverse proxy server Exchange 2003/2007: Connect Exchange 2010 CAS servers and test that client connections are able to flow through your external-facing reverse proxy server. Test all aspects of client connectivity, including Autodiscover when configuring a new Outlook installation to connect to mailboxes on Exchange 2010 and legacy mailbox servers. Exchange 2003/2007: Modify the DNS entries for external email access (for example, mail.contoso.com) to point to the Exchange 2010 CAS servers. Test and monitor client traffic to ensure that connections can be established to mailboxes on Exchange 2010 and legacy mailbox servers. Exchange 2003/2007: Make sure that the connection point for Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTP) is served by Exchange 2010. Disable RPC over HTTP on the Exchange 2003 FE servers and/or Outlook Anywhere on the Exchange 2007 CAS servers as these features are no longer required.

When preparing a transition plan, it s a good idea to scan the Internet for documents published by Microsoft and others that describe different technical aspects of the transition, especially when dealing with topics such as switching external access. TechNet is an obvious source, but the blogs of MVPs and other Exchange experts are also rich hunting grounds for tips and techniques that might solve a problem or accelerate progress.

This chapter reviewed how the CAS server role handles incoming client connections for multiple protocols. Apart from handling MAPI connections, the fundamental nature of this work has not changed much since Exchange 2007. However, Exchange 2010 introduces a whole new range of work for the CAS to do, so let s review how the Mailbox Replication Service, a new service that runs on the CAS, is responsible for manipulating mailboxes. We also need to talk about some other services that support user activity, so that s next on our list.

ailbox support services is a loose term that I have coined to describe administrative actions that support ongoing user activity. I ve included four broad categories of work in this chapter. We start with two important pieces of functionality managed by the Mailbox Replication Service: how to move mailboxes and how to import and export data to and from mailboxes. We then look at the MailTips service and how it delivers value to users by reminding them about mistakes that they might be just about to make. Finally, we consider the question of the Offline Address Book, a facility used by just about all road warriors to know about the people and groups in their organization.
