If your deployment has to process very large distribution groups, you can alter the cache size by inserting the following keys and providing a value for the number of recipients for the cache: MaxResolveRecipientCacheSize controls the memory used to cache recipient GUIDs . Because these GUIDs are unique, duplicate entries are easy to detect . MaxResolverMemberofGroupCacheSize controls the memory used to cache the group membership for the sender of the message . Exchange uses the cache to check for any restrictions that might apply to nested groups found when the full recipient list is expanded and thus avoids the need to make multiple lookups against Active Directory .

Exchange 2007 also removes duplicate addressees and tracks restrictions when it expands the membership of groups, but experience proved that performance was slow when Exchange was presented with a very large distribution group that might include many nested groups, some of which had complicated delivery restrictions. To explain the challenge that exists for any email system that has to process a very large set of recipients for a message, consider the case of a group intended to allow users to send to everyone in the company. In any large organization, it s unlikely that you would build such a group from individual recipients or even attempt to create a dynamic distribution group for the purpose. Even if you create a strong integration between the human resources system and Exchange, maintaining the membership of such a list could become a nightmare and the user interface of programs such as EMC isn t designed to deal with lists that contain more

than a couple of thousand members. In addition, Windows has its own challenges in dealing with very large groups. Windows 2003 and later versions are much better at handling operations such as membership updates for large groups, but Windows is still not optimized to handle a group that might have 50,000 or 100,000 members. Accordingly, the usual approach in these circumstances is to build an organization-wide distribution group from many smaller groups, each of which might represent a department or other entity within the organization. By combining all the groups in one supergroup, you create a much more manageable situation because you can devolve responsibility for maintaining group membership to the department level and also avoid any problems that might arise with software used to list, report, and update group membership. However, Exchange still has to deal with these supergroups when they are used to address messages. Each of the subgroups has to be expanded, each might have its own restrictions (for example, only certain users can send messages to the CEO s office), and there s a fair chance that some duplicate recipients will arise through individuals being associated with multiple departments. Exchange 2007 is able to expand all the groups in a supergroup and address messages to very large recipient sets but the lack of dedicated caches to track recipient membership and restrictions created a situation where Exchange had to continually access Active Directory as it built the recipient list. Even the fastest servers might take 20 or 30 minutes to process a very large list and the global catalog server used for the Active Directory lookups would be stressed by the queries flowing from Exchange. Adding the caches in Exchange 2010 enables Exchange to resolve group membership much more quickly and dramatically reduces the number of Active Directory queries.

Microsoft has sized the caches to handle all but extreme conditions and you shouldn t need to change the values unless you see evidence that hub transport servers are struggling to process very large groups . For instance, if messages sent to a supergroup are not delivered within five minutes, it might be an indication that Exchange needs to dedicate more memory, especially if the expanded group addresses more than 100,000 recipients .
