The routing table contains details of servers, databases, and connectors within the organization and is used by the transport system to determine the best routing for messages. The routing table is cached in memory and is used as the basis for routing decisions. Exchange calculates its routing table every time the transport service is restarted or following a change in the Exchange configuration data held in Active Directory that might affect

Even if no changes occur in the routing configuration, the transport service writes out a snapshot of the current routing table every 12 hours into an XML format log file that you can find in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles \Logs\Routing directory. If required, you can amend this interval by changing the RoutingConfigReloadInterval variable in the EdgeTransport.exe.config file in the Exchange \Bin directory. The routing log files are named RoutingConfig#x@mm_dd _yyyy hh_mm_ss.xml. For example, the routing log created on February 18, 2010 at 05:56:12 am (all times are in UTC) is named RoutingConfig#56@02_18_2010 05_56_12.xml. By default, Exchange keeps the last seven days of routing tables or up to 50 MB of files. Even in an organization where the routing infrastructure changes all the time, this allocation is usually more than sufficient to store seven days of routing logs, but if the routing tables were to exceed this allocation, Exchange uses a circular logging mechanism to discard the oldest logs to free space for new files. These values can be viewed with the GetTransportServer cmdlet and updated with the Set-TransportServer cmdlet:

The routing table is composed of 22 sectors that collectively form Exchange s knowledge of the current routing topology as it exists for the site that hosts the server that generates the table. Each site can have a different routing table because you can create scoped connectors that are only available to hub transport servers within the site and are invisible to hub transport servers outside the site. In this situation, the routing table for the site with the scoped connector will differ from the routing table for the other sites. Therefore, if you ever have to use the routing table to debug a routing problem, make sure that you connect to the server where you suspect the problem exists and use its copy of the routing table as a starting point. You can access the routing table by opening it with a browser (Figure 13-5) or other XML editor or through the routing table viewer from the Exchange toolbox. Looking through

message routing. These changes include the creation of new connectors, the amendment of connector details to define new address spaces, or the installation of a new hub transport server. The routing table also changes when hub transport and Edge servers renew the Kerberos token that they use to secure communication with Active Directory. The token is renewed every six hours.
13 The Exchange Transport System
the raw XML reveals some detail about the structure of the routing table. It is divided into sections that describe different aspects of the Exchange routing environment:
13
Routing Tables: Provides basic information about the routing table such as the date and time of creation plus information about server names (full Active Directory distinguished names are used to distinguish servers), mailbox databases, and legacy servers with server routes. Exchange Topology: Links server names with topology servers (servers that can participate in routing). Topology Servers: Lists the Exchange servers that can participate in routing. Topology Sites: Lists all the Active Directory sites, including those where an Exchange hub transport server is not present. Topology Site Link: Lists all the Active Directory site links. Active Directory Site Relay Map: Lists the Active Directory paths to every site containing an Exchange server. Active Directory Topology Path: Lists routes to every remote Active Directory site. Target Site: Lists Active Directory sites that contain hub transport servers. Routing Group Relay Map: Lists the routing groups for legacy Exchange servers. Routing Group Topology Site: Lists all routing groups and their connectors. Routing Group Topology Link: Lists the links between routing groups. Routing Group Topology Path: Links routing groups with connectors. Routing Group Connector Route: Lists routes to next hop for connectors. Server Routing: Lists every Exchange server and a route to it. Home Mdb Routing: Lists every database (including public folder databases) in the organization. Connector Routing: Lists every connector route in the organization. Connector Route: Lists every connector in the organization. SMTP Send Connector Configuration: Lists every SMTP Send Connector in the organization.
