For example, you can see properties that control the output of the server and user usage statistics logs. These logs can be analyzed to generate reports or provided as input to monitoring products such as Microsoft System Center Operations Manager to provide comprehensive reporting and analysis capabilities over different periods. The documentation for the Microsoft System Center Operations Manager product contains details about how to generate reports from transport data generated by Exchange. 844 13 The Exchange Transport System
Logically, the Set-TransportConfig cmdlet updates these settings. For example, to update the pickup directory where you can put well-formed SMTP message files to be sent by Exchange, you execute a command like this: Set-TransportConfig Server ExServer1 PickupDirectoryPath 'C:\Exchange\Pickup' 13
Exchange will create the directory if it doesn t already exist. Transport settings are specific to a hub transport server, so once again it is best practice to implement the same configuration on all hub transport servers within the organization. Just like the default send connector, custom send connectors are also SMTP-based. You can create new send connectors to connect Exchange to the Internet (or to transfer messages to foreign SMTP-based email systems) on a hub transport server in much the same way you d create an SMTP connector hosted on an Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 bridgehead server. However, there are some differences that you need to consider: You can create custom send connectors on either hub transport or Edge servers. Connectors on hub transport servers are registered in Active Directory and can therefore be managed like any other object known throughout the organization. Connectors on Edge servers are specific to a server and must be managed on that server. Unlike receive connectors, which are created automatically when you install a hub transport server and remain bound to that server, send connectors are managed at the organization level. However, before a hub transport server can use a send connector to route messages, you have to add the server as a valid source to the send connector s properties. Figure 13-12 shows that two servers are able to send messages via the Internet Relay Via Smart Host send connector. Both EMC and EMS flag warnings if you add a hub transport server that is not in the same Active Directory site as the hub transport servers that are already registered. The warning is to notify you that you might have created a nonoptimum routing because the transport service always uses deterministic routing and picks one Active Directory site to route messages. Therefore, the transport service cannot load balance messages across two sites. Instead, the transport service selects the first Active Directory site in the list of the connector s source hub transport list and always routes messages via that site. Note
If you know that the new source server has adequate network connectivity to support routing of messages from other Active Directory sites across the connector, it is acceptable, but not best practice, to add it . Note that even if a hub transport server is not registered as a valid source, it can still send messages across the connector, but it must first route the messages via one of the valid source hub transport servers .
