Some component along the message path was unable to route the message because of a size restriction. The restriction could be on a connector, imposed by the organization configuration, or imposed by a remote server.

For messages intended for internal recipients, we could customize the text further to add a URL that users can click to get more detailed guidance. We can amend the text for a customized message with the Set-SystemMessage cmdlet. Here s an example:

Note the way that the identity for the customized message is composed of the language code (en = English), whether it is intended for internal or external use, and the DSN code. Of course, to complete the job, we have to provide customized text for every language in use within the organization and decide whether we need to customize the text seen by external recipients.

When you ve finished composing the text to use, you can use the Get-SystemMessage cmdlet to check that the customized message is in place and all its properties are as expected:

Customizable system messages
The output is:
Text : We couldn't deliver your message because the email address that you provided was not found in the corporate directory. Please check <a href='http://contoso.com/directory.html'>Corporate Directory</a> to find the correct email address to use Internal : True Language : en DsnCode : 5.1.1 QuotaMessageType : AdminDisplayName : ExchangeVersion : 0.1 (8.0.535.0) Name : 5.1.1 DistinguishedName : CN=5.1.1,CN=Internal,CN=9,CN=DSN Customization,CN=Transport Settings,CN=contoso,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration, DC=contoso,DC=com Identity : en\Internal\5.1.1
Customized system messages are stored in the Exchange configuration data in Active Directory and are replicated throughout the organization to be available to all hub transport servers. The distinguished name for the system message provides the path to navigate to the object and we can view its properties in Active Directory using ADSIEdit (Figure 13-21).

13 The Exchange Transport System
You can maintain different sets of customized DSNs for hub transport and Edge servers. You might want to do this to provide additional information in the internal DSNs that you don t want to reveal to external recipients. As discussed in 14, Edge servers maintain their own configuration that is separate and isolated from the organizational settings stored in Active Directory and used by all hub transport servers. If you want to use customized DSNs for messages that are processed by Edge servers, you have to customize the DSNs on each of your Edge servers using the same technique as explained here.

Customizing quota messages
The New-SystemMessage cmdlet is also used to alter the text of the messages that advise mailbox or public folder owners that mailbox or public folder quotas are approaching their thresholds or have been exceeded. The Exchange Mailbox Assistant checks mailbox and public folder quotas nightly and then sends whatever messages are required. A warning message for a mailbox is sent to the mailbox owner until the user responds to the nagging and reduces her mailbox size under its quota. Warning messages for a public folder are sent to every owner registered for the folder (this could be a distribution group). System-generated messages do not count against mailbox quotas. Figure 13-22 illustrates the different parts of a typical system-generated quota message. You cannot change the message subject because the values for these fields come from translated strings in Exchange code. You cannot alter or change the graphical comparison of quota against usage. You can customize the text under the graphic that communicates the problem that exists with the mailbox (or public folder) and the action that the user should take. Many companies like to customize this text to point users to a Web site where they can get comprehensive advice about how to clean out old and obsolete items to reduce usage under the quota threshold. Table 13-7 lists the set of message codes for the messages that you can customize together with the default English language text and a note about the circumstances that provoke generation of the message.
