concurrent synchronization sessions. Exchange uses the following algorithm to determine which hub transport server will perform the synchronization:
1. The initial synchronization after running the New-EdgeSubscription cmdlet is
performed by the first hub transport server to discover the Edge server through a topology scan of the organization. Discovery occurs because the new Edge server and its connectors appear in the routing topology.
2. The hub transport server that discovers the Edge connection establishes an EdgeSync
lease option that sets a lock on the Edge subscription and makes it the preferred synchronization server. The lock prevents another hub transport server in the site from taking the lease option. Only hub transport servers that are present in the site when the Edge subscription is created can participate in synchronization, so if you add new hub transport servers and want them to be able to become the preferred server, you have to recreate the Edge subscription. You can see the hub transport that currently holds the lease by running the Test-EdgeSubscription cmdlet where it is reported as the LeaseHolder. The selection order for the preferred server is to use Exchange 2010 hub transport servers before Exchange 2007 hub transport servers. 14
3. The EdgeSync lease lasts for an hour. You can still run the Start-EdgeSynchronization
cmdlet and specify another hub transport server with the Server parameter to force a manual synchronization to force that server to connect to the Edge server. If you don t specify a server, the preferred server is used for the manual synchronization.
4. During the lease period, the preferred server will perform all automatic
synchronizations unless it is unavailable for some release. If the preferred server is unavailable, its lease lapses after five minutes and another hub transport server takes a new lease to become the preferred server and performs synchronization.
5. The preferred server continues until its lease elapses. At this point, it can renew the
lease and continue as the preferred server and stays in this role until it becomes unavailable for some reason. Automatic synchronization occurs between the preferred hub transport server and the Edge server according to the following intervals: Changes to configuration data such as new accepted domains, connectors, and servers are synchronized every three minutes. Changes to recipient data such as new mailboxes or groups or updates for user safelist collections are synchronized every five minutes.
You can alter these intervals with the Set-EdgeSyncServiceConfig cmdlet. First, let s retrieve the default settings to reveal the parameter names and their current values by running the
