You can clearly see the synchronization intervals (ConfigurationSyncInterval and RecipientSyncInterval) and the lease period for the preferred server (LockRenewalDuration). You can also see how long Exchange waits for a hub transport server to become available before it attempts to transfer responsibility for synchronization to another hub transport server (LockDuration). Finally, this output tells us that synchronization operations are logged into the \TransportRoles\Logs\EdgeSync directory under the Exchange installation directory. However, the default log level is None, and if you want to capture data about synchronization operations, you ll have to increase the logging level to Low, Medium, or High. For example:

This entry is for an update to a user mailbox. A property such as an email address might have been added or changed on the mailbox, or the user might have updated his junk email settings and Exchange now needs to synchronize those data to the Edge server for inclusion in anti-spam checking (safelist aggregation). We ll discuss how safelists get to the Edge server shortly.

You can force synchronization to occur immediately with the Start-EdgeSynchronization cmdlet. This has some value in that you can see the results of the synchronization. For example, if you create a new mailbox and then run Start-EdgeSynchronization, you should see that one new recipient is added as shown in this output:

INSIDE OUT
Edge server database
The Edge server stores data fetched from the hub transport server through the synchronization process in an AD LDS database . Like other Active Directory databases, AD LDS uses an Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database that comes complete with transaction logs that use circular logging to reduce the amount of storage required . Because synchronization is now based on delta changes, the number of transaction logs generated by Edge synchronization operations is much reduced in Exchange 2010 . The default location of the database is \TransportRoles\Data\Adam . You can change this location by editing the EdgeTransport .exe .config file .
INSIDE OUT
Edge-specific configuration settings
Edge synchronization doesn t configure everything on an Edge server . You still have to input the server license, and you also have to configure settings that are specific to the server, such as transport rules that you want to run for inbound messages, certificates to secure its services, block lists and other anti-spam settings, and details of connectors that are not automatically created through the Edge synchronization process . Microsoft refers to these as user-configured settings because they require administrator
Exchange anti-spam agents
intervention, whereas the other settings used by an edge server are maintained through synchronization . Because an Edge server effectively operates in an isolated box and doesn t share the data it stores in AD LDS with any other server, you have to apply user-configured settings separately on every Edge server you deploy by making the change on each server or by cloning a configuration from one server and importing it to others . Microsoft provides the ExportEdgeConfig .ps1 script to export configuration data from an Edge server to an XML format file and ImportEdgeConfig .ps1 to do the reverse and import configuration settings exported from another Edge server . These scripts are in \Scripts under the Exchange installation directory . See TechNet for more information about the exact steps necessary to perform export and import operations . Transport rules are an exception as they are not exported or imported using this method and you have to export and import rules separately using the Export- TransportRuleCollection and Import-TransportRuleCollection cmdlets . Remember that Edge servers maintain their own rule collection separate from that shared between hub transport servers in an organization, so when you export and import rule collections on an Edge server, you work only with the rules defined on that Edge server and don t affect or otherwise touch the rule collection used by the organization .
