In Windows 2000, you can specify a billing code for the fax to associate the fax with a project, account, or other billing mechanism. The billing code is included with fax events in the Application log. Billing codes are also included in the Application log for Windows XP, but you can only set the billing code globally in the Fax Console (with the Fax Configuration Wizard), rather than for each fax.

Using Cover Pages
As the previous steps illustrated, you can use a cover page as the only page of the fax for a sim ple message. The fax service can automatically include information on the cover page, such as your user information and the time the fax was sent. You can also include cover pages with other data. For example, you might need to fax a Microsoft Word document and include a cover sheet. The following section explains how. The first step in using cover pages with Microsoft Fax under Windows 2000 or Windows XP is to add or create them. Both operating systems include four basic cover pages; you can either use them without modification or change them to suit your needs. You also can create your own cover pages from scratch.
Adding Default Cover Pages
When you first configure Microsoft Fax, none of the default cover pages appear in your list of personal cover pages. Follow these steps to add the four default cover pages to your list in Windows 2000:
9
1 Double-click the Fax icon in Control Panel. 2 Click the Cover Pages tab and click Add. 3 Browse to \Documents And Settings\All Users\Documents\My Faxes\Common
Coverpages. Tip The root for user profiles on systems that have been upgraded from Windows NT is %systemroot%\Profiles rather than \Documents And Settings.
4 Select a cover page and click Open to add it to the list. 5 Repeat to add other cover pages, pulling them from other locations if available on
your local computer or on the network. Follow these steps to add personal cover pages in Windows XP:
1 Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Fax, Fax Console. 2 In the Fax Console, choose Tools, Personal Cover Pages. 3 In the Personal Cover Pages dialog box (see Figure 9-17), click Copy.

5 Select a cover page and click Open to copy it to your personal cover page store.
Creating New Cover Pages
Windows 2000 and Windows XP both include an application called the Fax Cover Page Edi tor that lets you create and save custom fax cover pages to use with the fax service. Essentially, the Fax Cover Page Editor is a lot like a page layout tool for desktop publishing. If you have experience using Word, Web site development applications, or even Microsoft Paint, you shouldn t have any trouble creating your own cover pages. Rather than explaining the Fax Cover Page Editor in detail, this section covers the main points to get you started. First, to start the editor in Windows 2000, double-click the Fax icon in Control Panel. On the Cover Pages tab, click New to open the editor (see Figure 9-18). In Windows XP, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Fax, Fax Cover Page Editor. Or, with the Fax Console open, choose Tools, Personal Cover Pages to open the Personal Cover Pages dialog box, then click New. Tip
Although you can create cover pages from scratch, you might find it easier to modify one of the existing pages to suit your needs, saving it with a different file name.
