You can insert graphics, text, and basic shapes on a cover page with the tools the editor pro vides. For example, you might want to include your company s logo on your fax cover pages. More important, perhaps, is your ability to insert dynamic fields on the cover page that Fax automatically fills in when you send a fax. These fields include your user name, fax number, time sent, and recipient name. Choose Insert, followed by Recipient, Sender, or Message, to view the types of fields you can insert on the cover page.

Assuming that you ve set up Microsoft Fax and Outlook properly, incoming faxes should be routed directly to your Inbox, where you can handle them just as you handle e-mail mes sages. Figure 9-19 shows a fax in the Inbox. Note that the message header s subject is always Received Fax, not the subject described in the fax. Because the fax comes through as a bitmap, the fax service has no way to extract the subject from the fax itself.
Part 2: Messaging

Figure 9-19. Faxes appear as messages with attachments in the Inbox.
If you ve configured the fax service for manual reception, the service displays a dialog box when a call comes in. Click Yes to answer the call and receive the fax. As with automatic reception, the fax service delivers the fax to your Inbox.
Viewing Faxes
The fax comes through as an attachment in TIF format, which you can view with the appli cation that is associated with TIF files on your system. To view a fax, open the attached TIF file as you would open any other attachment. By default, Outlook associates TIF files with the Microsoft Office Document Imaging application. The application is located by default in \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ MSPaper\Mspview.exe. If Document Imaging is the default application for TIF files, you should see something similar to Figure 9-20 when you open a fax TIF attachment.

You have an alternative in Windows XP
In Windows XP the fax opens in the Document Imaging application if you open the TIF file , from Outlook, but opens in the Windows Picture and File Viewer application if you save the TIF file and open it from a file system folder outside of Outlook. Each has its advantages. If you prefer this application over Document Imaging, change the file association for TIF files to point to the Windows Picture and File Viewer. See the upcoming section Setting the Default Viewer for details.
The Document Imaging application shows the fax pages as thumbnails in the left pane and shows the selected page in the right pane. You can rotate pages, zoom in, print, and perform a handful of other tasks that make it easier to view and print the fax. You can also move indi vidual pages to a new file by first selecting the page and then choosing Edit, Move Pages To New File. Document Imaging is a simple application, and a few minutes exploring its interface should make you comfortable using it.
Controlling the View
The Document Imaging application supports two viewing modes: Reading view and Page view. The default is Page view, which displays the fax as shown in Figure 9-20. You also can press F11 or choose View, Reading View to switch modes. Reading view displays the fax one page at a time, as shown in Figure 9-21. Click the up or down arrows to scroll through the document and view other pages. Click the down arrow beside the fax document name, and choose Return To Page View or press Esc to return to Page view.
