It s important to understand that when Outlook processes messages, it uses the security set tings from the security zone you ve selected it does not consider settings you might have made in other zones. For example, assume that you ve specified several restricted domains in the Restricted Sites zone but have configured Outlook to use the Internet zone. When an HTML message arrives that originated in one of the domains specified in your Restricted Sites zone, Outlook applies the security settings for the Internet zone, ignoring the restriction you ve placed on that domain. Because Outlook treats all HTML messages the same, adding 289

Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Inside Out sites to other security zones in Outlook doesn t provide additional security. Instead, you should consider the security zone you select to be the main determinant of how HTML mes sages are handled globally. (For that reason, this book doesn t cover the topic of adding sites to security zones.)
Unlike Outlook, Internet Explorer does consider the settings in all zones when determining how to handle pages from specific domains and security zones. If you re using Internet Explorer, it s therefore a good idea to add domain restrictions for various zones as needed. Keep in mind, however, that Outlook considers only the zone, not the domains it might specify.
Note
Configuring HTML Message Handling
Spammers are always looking for new methods to identify valid e-mail addresses. Knowing that a given address actually reaches someone is one step in helping spammers maintain their lists. If a particular address doesn t generate a response in some way, it s more likely to be removed from the list. One way spammers identify valid addresses is through the use of Web beacons. Often, spam mers send HTML messages that contain links to external content, such as pictures or sound clips. When you display the message, your mail program retrieves the remote data to display it, and the remote server then validates your address. These external elements are the Web beacons.
10
Note Nonspammers also frequently include external content in messages to reduce the size of the message. So, external content isn t a bad thing per se; it is dependent on how it is used. Outlook 2003 introduces a new feature that blocks external content from HTML messages by default, displaying a red X in the place of the missing content. The result is that these Web beacons no longer work because the external content is not accessed when the message is dis played. Messages that fit criteria for the Trusted Recipients and Trusted Senders lists are treated as exceptions the external content for these messages is not blocked. Another excep tion is content that originates from domains in the Trusted Sites and Local Intranet security zones in Internet Explorer, which is also allowed by default. Tip
You can rest the mouse pointer on a blocked image to view the descriptive alternate text (if any) for the image.
When you preview an image in the Reading Pane for which Outlook has blocked external content, Outlook displays a message in the InfoBar indicating that the blocking occurred (see Figure 10-4). You can click the InfoBar and choose Show Blocked Content to view the exter nal content. Outlook then downloads and displays the content in the Reading Pane. The same is true if you open a message; Outlook displays an indicator in the message form that 290
