Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Inside Out
Working with Tasks in Other Ways
Outlook provides a few other ways to work with tasks in addition to the Tasks folder. The following sections explain how to set up and track tasks in the TaskPad and in Outlook Today view.
Working with Tasks on the TaskPad
If you use the calendar feature of Outlook, you ll find that the TaskPad appears in the Calen dar folder s Day, Work Week, and Week views. Figure 21-14 shows Day view with the TaskPad highlighted. The TaskPad appears under the Date Navigator.

Use the TaskPad to work with tasks in your Calendar folder.
By default, Outlook shows only the Icon, Complete, and Subject columns for tasks in the TaskPad, but you can add and remove columns as needed. To do so, right-click the column header bar above the TaskPad and choose Field Chooser. Drag columns to and from the Field Chooser dialog box. You can modify tasks directly in the TaskPad just as you can in the Tasks folder, depending on the view settings you ve specified. For example, if you ve turned on in-cell editing, you can make changes to a task simply by clicking it and typing the needed changes. You can mark a task as completed, change the Actual Work value, change the due date, and so on. The TaskPad is, in this respect, no different from the Tasks folder. The primary benefit of the TaskPad is that it allows you to work with your schedule and your tasks in a single window.
Managing Your Tasks Tip Showing and hiding the TaskPad You can drag the borders of the TaskPad to show it or hide it. If you drag the TaskPad s bot tom border to the bottom of the view, the Date Navigator increases in size (and number of months displayed) to take up the space vacated by the TaskPad. Simply click in the bottom of the view and drag the mouse back up to restore the TaskPad. You also can drag the left edge of the TaskPad to the right edge of the display to hide it and the Date Navigator. You can use the same methods that you use to create tasks in the Tasks folder to create a new task in the TaskPad. Right-click in the empty area of the TaskPad and choose New Task or New Task Request, depending on whether you re creating the task for yourself or assigning it to someone else. If both the Show New Item Row option and in-cell editing are enabled, you can click the Click Here row between the first task in the list and the column header to create a new task. Alternatively, you can click the arrow beside the New button on the toolbar and choose Task to create a new task.
Changing the TaskPad s View
Outlook offers seven options for viewing tasks in the TaskPad. In essence, these offer different TaskPad views. To select a TaskPad view, right-click in the empty area of the TaskPad and choose TaskPad View, followed by one of these selections:
