In Windows NT, Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) lets you set up a dial-up server and a VPN server. Note that RRAS is not the same as Remote Access Service (RAS), which is included with Windows NT Server. If you don t have RRAS installed on your computer, you can download it from Microsoft s Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/NTServer/nts/downloads/winfeatures/rras/rrasdown.asp. The file for Intel-based systems is Mpri386.exe. To install RRAS, you need Windows NT Server with Service Pack 3 or later. If the RAS service included with Windows NT is currently installed, remove it and restart the server. Then double-click the Mpri386.exe file to start the installation process. Note

If you intend to set up a VPN server, you first need to add the Point-to-Point Tunneling Pro tocol (PPTP) to the server. To do so, right-click Network Neighborhood and choose Properties. Click the Protocols tab and click Add. Select Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, and click OK to add the PPTP protocol. Then, whether you re setting up the server for remote access or a VPN, you must configure the properties for the server on the Services tab of the Network dialog box. Select Routing And Remote Access Service and click Properties to start the configuration process. RRAS adds a management tool to the Administrative Tools folder so that you can manage RRAS. You also need to configure the properties for each user to allow or deny dial-up access. By default, all users are denied dial-up access. Open User Manager from the Administrative Tools folder on the Start menu, open the user s account, and click Dialin to configure the dial-in permission for the user. Repeat the process for any other users to whom you want to grant dial-up access.

When you install Windows 2000 or Windows 2003, Setup installs Routing and Remote Access Service automatically, so you don t need to add it. However, you do need to enable and configure the service. Note This section explains the steps for enabling and configuring RRAS on a Windows 2000 Server. The process is very similar on Windows Server 2003.

Working Offline and Remotely To do so, follow these steps:
1 Choose Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Routing And Remote Access to open
the RRAS console.
2 In the console, expand the branch in the left pane to locate the server, right-click the
server, and choose Configure And Enable Routing And Remote Access to start the Routing And Remote Access Server Setup Wizard.
3 On the wizard page, specify the type of RRAS server you want to configure, either
Remote Access Server or Virtual Private Network (see Figure 37-1).
Figure 37-1. Select the type of RRAS server you want to configure.
4 Click Next and follow the wizard s prompts to configure the server. The wizard
prompts you for the following information:
Protocols
Specify the protocols to be supported, which must already be installed on the RRAS server. All installed protocols are enabled for RRAS by default, but you can disable specific protocols after the wizard finishes.
Network interface
The wizard prompts for the network interface to assign to remote clients, which determines where the addresses and other access properties come from. If addresses will be allocated through Dynamic Host Configura tion Protocol (DHCP) in a multihomed server (one with multiple network interfaces), select the network interface where the DHCP server is located. You can assign addresses through DHCP (see the preceding option) or from a static address pool. If you choose a static pool, the wiz ard prompts you for the range of addresses to use.
IP address assignment
Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS)
You can configure the RRAS server to use RADIUS for authentication and accounting. You specify the IP address or host name for the primary and alternate RADIUS servers, along with the RADIUS shared secret, which is essentially a password the RRAS 921
