Drawings
FrontPage can draw lines, arrows, rectangles, and other objects within a Web page. FrontPage can create geometric shapes, block arrows, flowchart symbols, stars, and other shapes selected from a library.
AutoShapes WordArt
FrontPage can provide extremely rich formatting of text. This feature has been present in earlier releases of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. The introduction of VML makes it usable in FrontPage as well.
A line drawing expressed in VML is usually much smaller than the same drawing saved as a GIF or JPEG file. Currently, only Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and later can display VML. Other browsers ignore the VML code and display instead a GIF version of the same picture. After you add a picture to a Web page, FrontPage provides full access to the picture s HTML properties through easy-to-use dialog boxes. FrontPage also provides a variety of tools for modifying pictures. With these tools, you can enlarge pictures, reduce them, flip them top to bottom or right to left, and change their brightness and contrast. No matter where the picture comes from, FrontPage prompts you for a Save As location the next time you save the Web page.
FrontPage also includes a collection of basic picture editing tools. For more information about these tools, refer to 23, Editing Pictures in FrontPage.

Inserting Pictures by Dragging
FrontPage makes adding a picture to a Web page as easy as dragging and dropping.
Figure 10-1 shows how you can drag pictures from Page view s Folder List to a page that s
open in Design view. As you drag over the open Web page, the insertion point shows where
the picture will appear.

Adding and Formatting Pictures
Figure 10-1. FrontPage can accept pictures dropped from the Folder List, from Windows Explorer, or from Internet Explorer.
If the picture you want to use isn t located in the current Web site, you can proceed in two ways. You can: example, into the Folder List or Folders view. (If you have no reason to put the file anywhere else, the images folder is usually a good choice.) Then drag the file from its new location onto the open Web page.
Drag the file from its current location and drop it on the open Web page. The next time

you save the open page, FrontPage displays the Save Embedded Files dialog box, shown in Figure 10-2. This dialog box asks where in the current Web site you want to save the copied file. Tip Drag and drop pictures confidently in FrontPage 2003. In past releases, FrontPage would often mishandle pictures you dragged from a local file location and dropped onto a Web page. As a result, many Web designers formed the habit of always dragging pictures to the Folder List and then dragging the same picture from the Folder List to the open Web page. In FrontPage 2003, this problem is fixed and either proX cedure works fine.

Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out
Figure 10-2. When you save a Web page that contains pictures not already saved in the current Web site, this dialog box lists and suggests a save location for each picture.
You can drag picture files or, for that matter, any other kind of file to and from the following locations in almost any combination:
An open Web page A folder location in the same Web site A folder location in a different Web site A folder location in your local file system
Drag-and-drop operations involving the document area of an open Web page follow different rules than drag-and-drop operations among folder locations. This is because a Web page contains only a link to the picture s physical location, and not a copy of the picture itself. The rules governing drag-and-drop operations involving open Web pages are these:
