Troubleshooting
Using the Page Properties dialog box to create a thumbnail produces no improvement in download time You can display a large picture in a small space by opening the Picture Properties dialog box, selecting the Specify Size box on the Appearance tab, and specifying small values for height and width. This doesn t, however, create a smaller picture file. It only forces the browser to display the large picture in a small space. If you want to create a thumbnail picture entirely by hand:
1 Add the full-sized picture where you want the thumbnail to appear. 2 Display the Picture Properties dialog box, select the Appearance tab, and specify the
height and width you want the thumbnail to have.
3 Click the General tab, and then copy the URL of the full-sized picture from the Picture
box and paste it into the Default Hyperlink Location box. (To copy the URL, select it, and press Ctrl+C. To paste it, set the insertion point, and press Ctrl+V.)
4 Click OK to close the Picture Properties dialog box. 5 With the picture still selected, click the Resample button on the Pictures toolbar.

The Resample button creates a new version of the picture with genuine, physically smaller dimensions. It also triggers the Save Embedded Files dialog box the next time you save the Web page, which in turn confirms the save location for the resampled picture. Unless you want to replace the full-sized picture, be sure to rename the thumbnail when this dialog box appears. For more information about the Resample feature for editing pictures, refer to Resampling Pictures, on page 645.
Creating Thumbnails on the Fly
In some cases, it might be desirable to create thumbnail pictures on the fly rather than ahead of time. This avoids issues of keeping the thumbnails in sync with the full-sized pictures, but it does require the Web server to open the full-sized picture and reduce it in memory every time a request for the thumbnail arrives.
Part 3: Editing Basic Page Content
Adding and Formatting Pictures Tip
Resize any picture as much as you like.
The picsizer.aspx page can read almost any picture from the Web server s disk, resize it to almost any extent, and then send the results directly to a Web visitor s browser. For more information about the picsizer.aspx page, refer to the information about Insider Extra 3 on the companion CD.
On-the-fly thumbnails aren t a feature of FrontPage, but they re not hard to implement if you have a Windows Web server with the Microsoft .NET Framework installed. Here s the procedure:
1 Open the picsizer folder in the Inside Extra files you installed from the companion CD. 2 Copy the picsizer.aspx page out of the picsizer folder and into your Web site. 3 Open any Web page, and add the full-sized picture where you want a thumbnail to
appear.
4 Right-click the full-sized picture, and choose Picture Properties from the shortcut
menu.
5 In the Picture Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then copy the location
from the Picture box and paste it into the Location box. If you want the full-sized pic ture to appear in a new browser window, click the Change Target Frame button, select New Window, and then click OK.
6 Add the following text in front of the location that remains in the Picture box, where
<path>/ is the relative path, if any, from the entire Web page to the picsizer.aspx file:
<path>/picsizer.aspx size=100&url=
The size= value specifies the size in pixels of the thumbnail s height or width, whichever is larger. If you prefer, you can provide a height= or width= specification instead.
7 Figure 10-23 shows how the General tab should now appear.
The path, if any, in front of picsizer.aspx is the path from the current Web page
to the picture aspx page.
The path, if any, between url= and the name of your picture file is the path from
the picsizer.aspx page to your picture file.
8 Make any corrections to your page, and then click OK.
If you have a FrontPage-extended Web site on a server that has the .NET Framework installed, the thumbnail should appear in Design view within a few seconds. Otherwise, the thumbnail might look like a broken link until you publish your Web site and browse the page.
