Title
The name by which you or other FrontPage designers will select the template. This text will appear on the My Templates tab of the Page Templates dialog box, shown previously in Figure 12-2. The base file name used for saving the template s files and folders. Any verbal explanation or notes.
Name
Description
Save Template In Current Web.
If selected, saves the template in the current Web site. This instantly makes the template available to all designers of that Web site, but only when creating pages in that site.
If this check box isn t selected, FrontPage stores the template on your hard disk. This makes it available only to you, but it s available no matter what Web site you open.
Figure 12-7. Specify the template s name, description, and location in this dialog box.
6 Click OK to save the template. 7 If the Save Embedded Files dialog box shown in the background of Figure 12-8
appears, the new template makes reference to other files in the current Web site. For each such file, click the Set Action button, and then, in the Set Action dialog box shown in the foreground of Figure 12-8, choose one of the following options:
Save
Retains a copy of the file along with the template. When you or someone else uses the template and saves the resulting page for the first time, FrontPage optionally adds a copy of the embedded file to the new page s Web site.
Don t Save
Doesn t retain a copy of the file. Anyone who uses this template will be responsible for providing the given file.

Part 3: Editing Basic Page Content
Using Page Templates
Figure 12-8. This dialog box controls which component files FrontPage saves as part of a template. Click the Set Action button to display the Set Action dialog box in the foreground.
The procedure for modifying a template is somewhat less intuitive. Here it is:
1 Use the template to create a new page. 2 Make whatever changes you believe are necessary. 3 Repeat the procedure described for creating a new template. When FrontPage prompts
for permission to replace the existing template, click Yes. When you save a template to your hard disk, FrontPage saves it in a folder that s usually located at C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\<type>\<template>.tem, where:
<username> is your Windows logon account. <type> is CSS, Frames, or Pages, depending on the type of template. <template> is the name you specified when saving the template. The <template>.tem
folder normally contains a file named <template>.inf, and possibly a second file named <template>.dib. Tip Reveal the hidden Application Data folder. The Application Data folder is usually a hidden folder. Make sure you configure Windows Explorer to display hidden files and folders before you look for this folder. To do this, in Windows Explorer, first choose Folder Options from the Tools menu. Then, when the Folder Options dialog box appears, click the View tab, select the Show Hidden Files And Folders option, and click OK.

Part 3: Editing Basic Page Content
Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out When you save a template to your Web site, FrontPage saves it in a folder located at /_sharedtemplates/<type>/<template>.tem, where <type> and <template> have the same meanings as on disk. This folder is normally hidden, but you can use the following procedure to make it visible:
1 Choose Site Settings from the Tools menu, and click the Advanced tab. 2 Make sure the Show Hidden Files And Folders check box is selected.
There are two reasons for knowing where FrontPage keeps templates:
To delete a template, you must delete its .tem folder from the location just described.
Tip Show Hidden Folders is an option on the View tab of the Folder Options dialog box in Windows Explorer. Choose Folder Options from the Tools menu to display this dialog box.
To distribute a template stored on disk:
1 Copy the <type>\<template>.tem folder to an intermediate location. 2 Have the other designers copy it to their C:\Documents and Settings\
<username> \Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\<type>\<template>.tem folder). In an organizational setting, this is something you could automate through a logon script or a Systems Management Server (SMS) package. Changing a static FrontPage template doesn t change any pages it previously created. Of course, any variables, Include Page components, or shared style sheets specified by the tem plate remain as such on created pages, and you can maintain these components globally. But if you want changes in a template to directly affect pages that template previously created, proceed to the next section.
