A major shortcoming of most Web sites is that a visitor who clicks a hyperlink receives a whole new page. Figuring out which parts have changed is a major distraction. A frames page gets around this shortcoming by dividing the browser window into zones called frames. The frames page defines the overall frame layout but provides no actual content. Instead, each frame displays a self-sufficient Web page. The frames page tells the browser what pages to load initially; later, hyperlinks reload individual frames in response to visitor selections.

source. This file is called the frames page, and it contains no visible content of its own.
One HTML file occupies each defined frame. In Figure 15-1, three HTML files occupy
three frames. Each frame has a property, called its frame source, that specifies the URL of the Web page that provides the frame s content. The frames page specifies an initial frame source for each frame. 402
Part 4: Creating Web Sites Automatically
Creating Web Sites with Frames The labels in Figure 15-1 show the frame names and sources for each of the three frames that make up the frames page. The fact that Figure 15-1 displays four HTML files at once is a key concept. The browser s Address box shows only one URL, but three more are hidden. To see the other URLs, right-click the content area of any frame, and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. If you have the file open in FrontPage, right-click a frame, and choose Page Properties from the shortcut menu. The Page Properties dialog box appears as shown in Figure 15-2.
Figure 15-2. The Page Properties dialog box for the main title frame shows a URL different from that of the frames page.
A frames page can also be the source of another frame (that is, you can have frames pages within frames). This can become extremely confusing, but it works. When a frames page and its frame sources are displayed, hyperlinks in any frame can display new content in the same frame, a different frame, the entire window (replacing the entire frameset), or a different window. A link attribute called the target frame specifies by name which frame should receive the content of a given hyperlink. The browser looks for the target frame specification in three locations. In order, these are:
A target on the hyperlink
Dialog boxes such as the Insert Hyperlink dialog box can specify the target frame for an individual hyperlink. Simply click the Target Frame button, and specify the name of the frame where the new page should appear.
For more information about the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, refer to 11, Building Hyperlinks.
A base target in a content page
If a Web page contains a <base> tag, that tag specifies a default target frame for all hyperlinks in that page. This applies to all hyperlinks in 403

Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out that page that don t specify a target frame. In FrontPage, this setting appears as Base Location on the General tab of the Page Properties dialog box.
The current frame
If neither the hyperlink nor a <base> tag in the page that contains it specifies a target frame, the frame that contains the hyperlink receives the new content.
If you specify a target frame that doesn t exist, the browser will usually display the named HTML file in a new window. Always double-check frame name spellings, especially if a frames page isn t working properly. Figure 15-1 illustrates the most frequent use of the target frame in current Web pages. Notice the menu of hyperlinks in the left frame. When the Web visitor clicks one of these hyperlinks, the corresponding page appears in the main frame to the right. If the content appeared in the menu frame, it might obscure the other menu choices, making them unavailable. By setting each hyperlink s target frame (or the menu page s default target frame) to main, you ensure that the menu remains visible in the left frame and that the new content appears in the right frame. In addition to the frame names you create as part of a frames page, the four built-in target frame names listed in Table 15-1 might be useful. FrontPage sometimes identifies these by the common target names listed in the table s second column.
