Figure 16-3. Clicking the Browse button in the Remote Web Site Properties dialog box displays this dialog box for locating a remote Web site.
If the remote FrontPage, SharePoint, or WebDAV Web site server requires SSL communica tion, select the Secure Connection Required (SSL) check box. The URL in the Remote Web Site Location box should then specify https instead of http.
For more information about setting up Web servers to require SSL, refer to Creating a Virtual Server, in Appendix O.
Clicking the Click Here To Learn More link starts your browser and displays a page on Microsoft s Web site that lists Web Presence Providers (WPP) who sell Web space with the FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
To locate a WPP that offers full support for FrontPage-extended or SharePoint Team Web sites, visit either http://www.microsoftwpp.com/wppsearch or http://www.actionjackson.com.

When you click OK, FrontPage will try to connect to the remote Web site you specified. If that Web site has security controls in effect, FrontPage might display the dialog box prompt that appears in Figure 16-4, prompting you for an authorized user name and password. For updating an existing server-based Web, this must be a user name with authoring privileges. For creating a new server-based Web, the user name must be an administrator of the new Web s parent.

Troubleshooting
Unable to open remote Web site When you first connect to a remote Web site, the message box shown in Figure 16-5 might appear. This indicates that FrontPage couldn t establish communication with the remote Web site server.

Figure 16-5. This message box indicates a failure to connect with the FrontPage Server Extensions at the remote Web site. Here are the four most likely causes of this problem and the most likely solutions: The Web server might not have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed. If you believe that the FrontPage Server Extensions are installed on the remote Web site server, contact the server administrator and ask to have the Server Health jobs run against the remote Web site. If that fails, ask to have the extensions reinstalled. For more information about the checking server health, refer to Checking Server Health, on page 481. If you believe that the FrontPage Server Extensions aren t installed, you can: Contact the server administrator and ask to have the extensions installed.

Part 5: Publishing and Maintaining Web Sites
Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out
Contact your Web provider or IT department and ask for space on a Web server that runs the server extensions. Find a new Web provider that supports the FrontPage Server Extensions. Publish your Web by WebDAV or FTP . The Web server might be temporarily out of service. If so: Wait to see whether the connectivity problem goes away. If you have an intermittent Internet connection (such as a dial-up line), make sure it s active. Check connectivity to the remote server by pointing your browser to one of its pages. If you can t access the remote server and also can t access any other sites on the same network, contact your network provider. If you can access sites almost anywhere but the remote server, contact whoever administers the remote server. If your connection is through a proxy server, the proxy server settings might be incorrect. FrontPage uses the same Internet settings as Internet Explorer. This means that you can resolve FrontPage proxy server problems by resolving Internet Explorer proxy server problems. The location of these settings tends to change with each version of Internet Explorer, but to see the settings in Internet Explorer 6, choose Internet Options from the Tools menu, click the Connections tab, and click LAN Settings. Contact whoever administers the proxy server for the correct settings. If Internet Explorer can browse the remote server, any inability to publish in FrontPage isn t a proxy server problem. A proxy server is a special network device that isolates a private network from the Internet. It lets computers on the private network browse Internet sites, but blocks computers on the Internet from connecting to those on the internal network. An error might have occurred in the Web server. This is an explanation of last resort. If all else fails, contact the folks who operate the remote Web site server and ask them to check it for proper operation. Some actions they might take include checking the Event Log for unusual errors, running Check And Fix on the remote Web site, reinstalling the FrontPage Server Extensions, stopping and restarting the Web server, and rebooting the entire server.
