A background picture appears behind any other pictures or text on the page. If the picture is smaller than the page, the browser repeats it left to right and top to bottom. With this tiling behavior, a small picture, which is fast to download, can fill the entire screen. To keep the background picture from repeating left to right, make it wider than any typical computer screen display. A width of 1600 pixels is usually sufficient. Most picture editors have features called Add Margin or Extend Canvas that can widen pictures this way. Fill the added pixels with your background color, or make them transparent. Repeating pixels of the same color compress very well and add little to file size and download time. Wide pictures of this kind are often used to create border designs along the left margin. The design occupies the leftmost 20 or 30 pixels, and the rest of the picture is either a solid color or transparent. Avoid strong colors or patterns in background pictures. These can easily obscure your text.

Advanced Page Properties
The Advanced tab of the Page Properties dialog box controls overall page margins, CSS styles, and settings that Microsoft Visual InterDev design-time controls (DTCs) use. This tab appears in Figure 18-3.

Note DTCs are a type of Microsoft ActiveX control that can enhance either FrontPage or Microsoft Visual Studio 6 with additional editing and HTML-generation features. Microsoft Visual Studio .NET no longer supports them.
Part 6: Formatting Your Web Pages
Controlling Overall Page Appearance The margin settings for a Web page define the number of pixels between one corner of the browser window and the closest spot where page elements could possibly appear. Most browsers have default margins of 8 or 15 pixels on all sides. If you make a picture the very first element on a page, for example, it will actually appear 8 to 15 pixels below the top of the browser window, and 8 to 15 pixels from the left edge. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator have never quite agreed on the proper HTML code for controlling page margins. FrontPage 2003 supports all the variations that both browsers support, but configuring the margins of a Web page is still more confusing than you might expect. The first column in Table 18-1 lists the options FrontPage provides.
