Width Height
The width of the document area you want to target. The height of the document area you want to target. A description that will identify this choice on the Page Size menu.
Description
3 Click OK to close the Page Size dialog box.
Using HTML Tables for Page Layout To modify an existing Page Size menu command, select it in the Modify Page Sizes dialog box, and fill in the resulting Page Size dialog box as you would for a new command. To remove a command from the Page Size menu, select it in the Modify Page Sizes dialog box, and then click Remove. Note that the Width and Height settings in the Modify Page Sizes dialog box specify the size of the browser s document area, not the external size of the browser window. You must exclude the browser s window borders, title bar, menu bar, toolbar, status bar, and any other such elements when you specify these settings. The windowsize.htm Web page shown in Figure 19-2 might be helpful in this regard.
Figure 19-2. Each time you open it, this Web page displays the browser s internal and external window dimensions.
To use this page:
1 Start the browser you re concerned about. 2 Set the browser s window size and view settings as you want them. 3 Open the ch19/windowsize.htm page from the files you installed from the companion
4 Use the resulting Internal Size measurements to configure a command on the Page
Size menu.
Part 6: Formatting Your Web Pages

Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out Important When using the windowsize.htm page, be sure to click the browser s Refresh button after resizing the browser s window size or view settings. With a page size setting in effect, Design view always displays pages with the width you specify. If the Design view window exceeds the width you specify, Design view displays a gray area on each side of the WYSIWYG display. If the Design view window is narrower, you ll need to scroll it left and right. To simulate the browser s document height, FrontPage draws a horizontal dotted line across the page. Figure 19-3 shows these features.
Part 6: Formatting Your Web Pages
19
Figure 19-3. FrontPage can adjust the Design view width to simulate any size browser window. Gray areas indicate unused space at the left or right of the Design view window. The dotted horizontal line simulates the bottom of the Web visitor s window when the page first appears.
Preview mode also honors any page size settings you specify. If, however, the preview mode document area is smaller than the height and width you specify, preview mode will compress any page elements it can to make the document fit. This is also what browsers do. Figure 19-4 shows preview mode displaying the same document as in Figure 19-3, with the same page size settings in effect.
Using HTML Tables for Page Layout
Figure 19-4. Preview mode can also simulate a given browser window size. To activate such sizing, choose Page Size from the View menu.
Displaying Rulers and Grids
If you plan to design fixed-width Web pages, you ll probably appreciate having graduated rulers along the edge of the Design view window and gridlines at convenient intervals. Here s how to get these features:
