Most real-life objects aren t. One solution to this dilemma, although a poor one, is to enclose all pictures in borders. This often produces unat tractive results. A second and better approach is coloring the unused portions of the picture to match its surroundings the Web page background. However, this solution also has drawbacks: It requires a different picture version for each background color. Smoothly matching a textured background picture generally isn t possible. Web visitors can instruct their browsers to ignore background pictures, background colors, or both. The best solution is to make portions of the picture transparent, as if the picture (but not its background) were printed on a sheet of clear plastic. Figure 23-5 provides an example of this technique. The picture on the left, with a white background, doesn t blend with the textured background. The picture on the right has a transparent background that lets the page s background show through. 23

Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out
Figure 23-5. The picture on the left has a white background; the one on the right has a transparent background. Most GIF file editors have features for handling transparency, although you can also control transparency from within FrontPage. The FrontPage procedure is as follows: 1 Add the picture to your Web page, if you haven t already. 2 Make sure the Pictures toolbar is displayed. 3 Click the picture to select it, and then click the Set Transparent Color button on the Pictures toolbar.
Set Transparent Color 23
4 Move the mouse pointer over the selected picture, and click any pixel of the color
that should become transparent. All pixels matching that color in the picture will immediately become transparent. 5 To make a different color transparent, repeat steps 4 and 5. Only one color of a GIF
can be transparent at a time. To turn off transparency for a picture, repeat steps 3 and 4. However, in step 4, click the area that s already transparent. Caution If you re setting transparency for an image with text, make sure that the texture or color of your Web page s background won t interfere with the text s readability. Editing Pictures in FrontPage
Applying Monochrome and Washouts
Clicking the Color button on the Pictures toolbar displays a drop-down menu that contains four commands. Despite the button name Color, each of these commands modifies the amount of black and white in the current picture. Here are descriptions of each command: Automatic
Color
Displays a picture in its natural state. This command applies only to pictures contained within VML codes, such as pictures copied out of Microsoft Word and pasted into FrontPage. It doesn t apply to pictures (including VML drawings) that you create using FrontPage alone. Removes all color from a picture (that is, it converts the color to continuous shades of gray). You can undo this operation by clicking the button again, but not after you save the picture. Grayscale
Black & White
Converts every pixel to either black or white, sometimes producing a silhouette effect. Like the Automatic command, this command applies only to pictures contained within VML codes. Lightens every pixel in a picture. This makes it more suitable, for example, for use as a background. You can wash out a picture only once before saving your changes. To doubly wash out a picture, wash it, save it, and then wash it again. Wash Out
Figure 23-3 previously showed these picture effects.
Beveling Edges
This feature lightens the top and left edges of a picture while also darkening the bottom and right edges. This creates the effect of a three-dimensional button. Bevel
To create this effect, select the picture and then click the Bevel button on the Pictures toolbar.
Resampling Pictures
23
To physically resize a picture, you must both resize and resample it in FrontPage. First resize the file, and then click Resample on the Pictures toolbar. Resampling creates a larger or Resample smaller file than the original, rescaled by mathematically averaging pixels. Unlike resizing, resampling does change the file stored in your Web site.
