Once the Photo Gallery Properties dialog box contains a list of pictures, you can preview the appearance of any picture simply by clicking it. A thumbnail of that picture will then appear in the preview box at the right of the list of files. Web visitors will see thumbnails of your pictures in the order that the Photo Gallery Properties dialog box displays them. To move a picture up or down, select it, and click the Move Up or Move Down button. To move several pictures up or down as a group, hold down the Shift or Ctrl key while selecting them.

To remove a picture from the gallery, select the picture in the file list in the Photo Gallery Properties dialog box, and then click Remove. This deletes both the full-sized and thumbnail file from the photo gallery, but not the source file you originally added.

Once your photo gallery contains at least a preliminary list of pictures, you ll no doubt want to view them as Web visitors will. To do this:

appears, make any adjustments you want to the name, folder location, and file type of the pictures it displays. You should, however, save all the files.

After you complete step 1, another option is to simply click the Preview tab at the bottom of the Page view window. However, because the Preview window is often too small to display the entire component, previewing in the browser is usually a better choice.

The main advantage of using a photo gallery is that it automatically displays multiple pictures in a professionally designed layout. You do, however, have some control over how those pictures appear on the page. The Layout tab of the Photo Gallery Properties dialog box, shown in Figure 24-4, controls this.

Using FrontPage Photo Galleries On the Layout tab, a list box titled Choose A Layout offers four ways of displaying your pictures. Selecting any layout displays a preview in the Preview box and a description just below it. Here are the layout options:

Select this layout to display pictures in rows across the screen, with descriptive text below each picture. Specify a value in the Number Of Pictures Per Row box to control how many pictures appear in each row of the layout. Select this layout to arrange pictures in a circular pattern much like a collage. The caption text appears when a visitor moves the mouse pointer over the picture. This layout doesn t display Description text.

Select this layout to display a full-sized picture in the center of the page. Thumbnail pictures scroll across the top of the page, where visitors can select them. Caption and Description text appears below the full-sized picture. This option doesn t work properly in Netscape Navigator, at least through version 7. Select this layout to display pictures in columns with Description text arranged to the right of the pictures. Specify a value in the Number Of Pictures Per Row box to control the number of pictures that appear in each row of the layout.
