FrontPage shows system-maintained Site Parameters as placeholders but displays developer-defined Site Parameters as values. Browsers display the final values in either case. The Substitution component for Description displays the placeholder [Description] in Figure 29-10 because the parameter is empty. In a browser, however, empty values appear blank. The Description parameter displays a file s Comment property, as entered in the Folder List or in Folders view. For more information about entering information in this parameter, refer to Working with Folders View, on page 180. 29 The Component Errors report lists all cases where Substitution components refer to missing or empty Site Parameters. For more information about the Component Errors report, refer to Component Errors, in Appendix D. Using Shared Borders
This section discusses another FrontPage facility that standardizes content and appearance across an entire Web site. Shared borders provide a way to insert standard content at the upper, lower, left, or right edges of any or all pages in the same Web site. Shared borders appear between your Web page s normal content and the upper, left, right, or lower edge of the browser window. You can put whatever you want inside the shared border 761 Part 8: Incorporating Advanced Content
Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out area, but the same content appears in the same border for every page in your Web site. The lower shared border for one page can t be different from the lower shared border of any other page, for example. When Microsoft decided to call these borders shared, they weren t kidding! A typical use of shared borders would include a Page Banner component in the upper shared border; a Link Bars component in the left shared border; and copyright, contact, or date and time information in the lower shared border. Figure 29-11 illustrates such a page. Figure 29-11. This page uses a Page Banner component in the upper shared border, a Link Bars component in the left shared border, and a Date And Time component in the lower shared border. A Page Banner or Link Bars component included in a shared border produces different results in each page where the shared border appears. The same is true for other components, such as Date And Time or Substitution, that display values stored outside the Web page itself. For more information about the Date And Time component, refer to Using the Date And Time Component, on page 721. Part 8: Incorporating Advanced Content
