Drop-Down List One Record Per Item
Means that FrontPage will populate a drop-down list with choices from the selected database records. The list then works like any other drop-down list in an HTML form. Table 36-3 lists additional options for this setting. This setting is unavailable if you chose ASP.NET in step 2.

Formatting Options for Drop-Down List One Record
Effect
Select the field that contains the values the visitor will see in the drop-down list. Select the field that contains the values the form will submit to the Web server.
Per Item
Option
Display Values From This Field Submit Values From This Field
Typically, the reason for displaying one field and submitting another is to display an option to the visitor in words (such as employee name) but to send the Web server a code (such as employee number).
Figure 36-13. The fourth page of the Database Results Wizard (on the left) controls the arrangement of the displayed data. The wizard s last page (on the right) displays either an unlimited number of records per Web page or a set number with Forward and Back buttons.
9 Click Next after you ve selected the formatting options you need. 10 The Database Results Wizard s final page (shown on the right in Figure 36-13)
provides another way of limiting the number of records displayed per page. This dialog box provides the following options:
Display All Records Together Split Records Into Groups
Displays all selected records on one Web page.

Displays a limited number of records per Web page. FrontPage creates first, last, forward, and back buttons so that the Web visitor can move through the database. The Records Per Group box specifies the number of records per page. 891

Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out
Add Search Form
If selected, creates an HTML form that prompts for and submits any form field values you specified as record selection criteria. (The next section in this chapter describes how to do this.) If you didn t specify any criteria involving form fields, this option will be dimmed.
For this example, specify 5 records per group. If you chose in step 2 to create an ASP page, clicking Finish in the final Database Results Wizard page will create the Web page shown in Figure 36-14. The two shaded table rows are just for information and don t appear on the Web visitor s browser. The middle row is the Database Results region, which repeats once per record displayed.
Figure 36-14. creates.
This Web page is typical of ASP pages that the Database Results Wizard
Figure 36-15 shows how Design view displays the ASP.NET Web page that creates the results shown previously in Figure 36-8. This page contains four ASP.NET components, and as you can see, FrontPage is unable to display three of them. The top and bottom components display the page banner and page footer, respectively. The visible component in the middle line is an ASP.NET DataGrid control, which actually displays the data. FPDB:DBRegion is a custom FrontPage component that retrieves the data and loads the DataGrid control.

Part 9: Using Forms and Databases
Accessing and Updating Databases with FrontPage
Figure 36-15. FrontPage displays an ASP NET Database Results region as two gray bars: . one for an ASP .NET DataGrid control and another for a custom control that runs the database query.
FrontPage preview mode won t display data in pages containing Database Results regions; preview mode actually displays Web pages temporarily saved to disk and doesn t have access to all the facilities of a Web server. To view the page in action, save it with the appropriate file extension (.asp or .aspx) in an executable folder in a server-based Web site, and then choose the Preview In Browser command from the File menu or the Standard toolbar. Figure 36-7 and Figure 36-8 show Web pages that these actions display.
