In Summary
This chapter explained how team members can use the features of a SharePoint Team Site to share documents and coordinate their activities. It also explained how to create custom lists and custom pages that perform standard functions, and it briefly explained how to adminis@ ter such a site. The next chapter explains how FrontPage can develop content for SharePoint Team Sites, including the use of Web Parts and database access. Par t 10: Collaborating with Teams and Workgroups

Leveraging Windows SharePoint Services

That material, however, only scratched the surface of what Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services can do. This chapter explains how you can use Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 to create not only SharePoint Team Sites, but other kinds of SharePoint applications as well. It then explains how to create your own Web Part Pages, how to access data sources located both inside and outside a SharePoint application, and how to display and otherwise integrate such data with the rest of the application. None of this, by the way, requires that you write even a single line of program code. As you read this chapter, keep in mind the question of what constitutes a data-driven Web site. Almost every feature this chapter describes would be useless without an underlying database to accept, store, and deliver information. This kind of dependency on databases is certainly a major factor in declaring a site data-driven. Creating SharePoint Team Sites
Creating the first SharePoint Team Site on a Web server affects the entire virtual server and is therefore a job for the server s administrator. 37 briefly explained how an admin istrator would do this. Basically, the administrator first installs Windows SharePoint Services on the computer and then SharePoint-extends one or more virtual Web servers on that machine. The administrator would typically choose a new, empty server to extend, but in any event, SharePoint-extending a virtual server creates one SharePoint site in the server s root. In practice, most SharePoint-extended servers support many groups of people or applications, each of which requires its own site or group of sites. For more information about adding Windows SharePoint Services to a Web server, refer to Creating a New SharePoint Team Site, on page 927.
