When several people work on the same Web site, there s always a chance that two people might start working on the same page at the same time. The result is a duel between versions; whoever saves the file last overlays the first person s updates. To compound the problem, changing a Web site page can take days or weeks if the change is part of a general site upgrade or requires multiple approvals. Of course, that doesn t mean that someone s going to keep the page open in FrontPage all that time, but it does mean that the designer wants the file safe from being updated by other people during that interval. Document Check-In and Check-Out provides an answer to this problem. Here s how this feature works:

2 Before a designer begins changing a file, he or she checks the file out (that is, takes
ownership by using a shortcut menu option). This does two things:
39
It prevents any other designer from making changes to the file. It saves a copy of the file for possible restoration.
3 After the file is checked out, it shows up as locked to other designers and administra
tors of the same Web site. If they try to open the file, they ll get an error message with two options: either give up editing the file or open a read-only copy. They can save the read-only copy under another name, but they can t update the checked-out original.
4 When the designer who checked out the file is finished with any updates, he or she can
take either of two actions:
Check the file in, which relinquishes ownership and deletes the backup copy. Undo the checkout, which restores the backup copy (undoing all changes) and
then relinquishes ownership. Document Check-In and Check-Out is optional for the following environments:
Disk-based Web sites Server-based Web sites using the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions Server-based Web sites using the FrontPage Server Extensions 2002
In addition, Document Check-In and Check-Out is always in effect for Web sites running on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. For environments where Document Check-In and Check-Out is optional, the options that control it appear on the General tab of the Site Settings dialog box. To display this dialog box, choose Site Settings from the Tools menu, and then click the General tab. Figure 39-9 provides an example.

To configure Document Check-In and Check-Out, specify these settings:
Use Document Check-In And Check-Out
Select this check box to activate Document Check-In and Check-Out. Clear the check box to disable it. Select this option if the current Web site
Check Out Files From The Remote Web Site
is actually a local copy of a shared site. To appreciate this option, imagine that you and several other designers are working on the same Web site. A single remote site contains the master copy of the site in progress, but each designer works on a local copy. Checking out a file on the local site accom plishes nothing, because no other designers access the local site. But if FrontPage records checkins and checkouts on the remote site, they apply to all designers who configure their local sites to check out files from that remote site. This option will be dimmed if you haven t configured a remote Web site location that corresponds to the current Web site. To configure the location of a remote site, close the Site Settings dialog box, switch to Remote Web Site view, and click the Remote Web Site Properties button.
Check Out Files From The Local Web Site
Select this option if you and several other
developers update the current site directly. This option is always in effect for Windows SharePoint Services sites.
