A complete course in HTML, complete with listings, descriptions, and examples of every defined tag, is clearly beyond the scope of this book. Fortunately, hundreds of other refer7 ences are available to fill the vacuum. Visit your local bookstore and browse a number of them, searching for one or two that start at your level of expertise and explain whatever you re ready to learn next. There are also many HTML sites online. You can find them using your favorite search engine. It s never a bad idea for any Web developer to have at least a working knowledge of HTML how it works, and what its limitations are. Hopefully, FrontPage will create all the HTML you ll ever need so you ll never have to deal with the code directly. The rest of this chapter is for those who want to fine-tune their Web pages, for the curious, and for those who already know how to do something in HTML and simply prefer not to learn another approach.

Reveal Tags doesn t give you any additional editing capability; it just keeps you informed about the HTML that FrontPage creates. It s also useful for locating HTML that has no visible appearance, such as paragraphs with nothing in them. There s something else Reveal Tags doesn t do: It doesn t reveal tags that FrontPage indicates another way. Notice the table in Figure 40-1, for example. The <table> start tag is visible, but Show All not the <tr> and </tr> tags that delimit each row, and not the <td> and </td> tags that bound each cell. The lines around each table cell, however, provide the same information. The </table> end tag is below the displayable portion of the window. Don t overlook the following commands, which control the visibility of the elements that Reveal Tags doesn t display:
Show Layer Anchors
The Show All button on the Standard toolbar controls the visibility of block
endings, line endings, table cells, and anchor icons that show the physical position of repositioned content. 1033

the HTML that defines a layer physically resides.
Highlight Dynamic HTML Effects
The Highlight Dynamic HTML Effects button on the DHTML Effects toolbar is
described in 26, Enhancing Web Pages with Animation. This button controls the visibility of spans and divisions involved in such effects.
Using the Quick Tag Selector
The Reveal Tags option shows the location of many common HTML tags, but it doesn t help you select or modify those tags. What s more, it obstructs your view of the normal Web page content. For all these reasons, the Reveal Tags features hasn t achieved much popularity among FrontPage designers. The need remains, however, to visualize and modify HTML code even though you re working in Design view. To meet this need, FrontPage 2003 provides a new user interface element called the Quick Tag Selector. In Figure 40-2, the Quick Tag Selector appears immediately above the Design view window; it looks like a row of HTML tags.
40
Figure 40-2. The Quick Tag Selector not only displays the hierarchy of tags that surrounds the current selection, but can also select any tag it displays.
It s more useful, however, to think of these as icons:
The rightmost icon, <p>, indicates that paragraph tags (<p> and </p>) enclose the
current selection.
The next icon to the left, <td>, indicates that table cell tags (<td> and </td>) enclose
the paragraph tags. 1034
Part 11: Working Directly with Code
Working with HTML Code
The next icon, <tr>, indicates that table row tags (<tr> and </tr>) enclose the table cell
tags, and so forth.
The leftmost icon is always <body>, indicating that <body> and </body> tags enclose
the entire visible portion of the page. As you select different elements in Design view, the Quick Tag Selector changes to show the hierarchy of tags enclosing the current selection. If the series of tag icons is wider than the Design view window, scroll buttons appear on each side of the Quick Tag Selector. The Quick Tag Selector also works in reverse, and this accounts for its name. Clicking any icon in the Quick Tag Selector quickly selects the corresponding content in Design view. This makes it very easy to select any HTML element you want, even if you re working with nested tables or other elements that are very close together. Clicking the down arrow on any Quick Tag Selector icon displays a menu offering these commands:
