To understand how this works, refer again to Figure 5-1. The C:\Documents and Settings\jim\My Documents\My Web Sites folder contains four files, named footer.htm, index.htm, styles.css, and yourhome.htm. The _vti_cnf folder also contains four files with these names, but they aren t HTML or CSS files at all. They re special text files where FrontPage stores information about the corresponding content files. In Figure 5-2, for example, Microsoft Notepad shows the contents of the _vti__cnf/ index.htm file that describes index.htm. FrontPage creates and maintains all the files and file contents that reside within the _vti_cnf folder. Disturbing this information might interfere with the proper operation of FrontPage. This file, located in a _vti_cnf folder, describes a Web page named index.htm. _vti_pvt Another hidden folder. This is where FrontPage stores Web settings, the Navigation view structure, the Task List, and other information about the current Web site. Contains pictures and graphics you want to use in your Web pages. images
The reason for presenting this information isn t because you need to work with these special files and folders yourself. The point is rather to show that FrontPage maintains a great deal of information about the pages in your Web site. The term for this information is metadata, or data about data. If you change files manually (for example, without going through 144 Understanding FrontPage-Based Web Sites FrontPage), the metadata will be incorrect, and FrontPage will malfunction in any number of major or minor ways. This situation leads to the following advice: After you create a FrontPage-based Web site, always use FrontPage to change it. If you want
to use an editor other than FrontPage occasionally, identify it to FrontPage in this way: 1 Choose Options from the Tools menu. 2 When the Options dialog box appears, click the Configure Editors tab. 3 On that tab, associate the editor with the appropriate file type. Having done this, right-click the file you want to edit, choose Open With from the shortcut menu, and select the editor you want. For more information about configuring FrontPage to invoke external editors, refer to Configuring External Editors, on page 1118. If you must change a FrontPage-based Web site directly, finish your changes, open the
Web site in FrontPage, and then choose Recalculate Hyperlinks from the Tools menu. This will regenerate all the metadata FrontPage depends on for proper operation. Note FrontPage isn t the only program that can maintain the integrity of a FrontPage based Web site while making changes. Any program that uses FrontPage client software to update a server-based Web site will preserve the correctness of that site. This includes http:// locations that you open from the My Network Places desktop icon, http:// locations that you specify in file-oriented dialog boxes, and http:// locations that you specify in Microsoft Visual Studio and other programs. Figure 5-3 shows the Web site selected in Figure 5-1 open in FrontPage. With the exception of the _private and images folders, FrontPage doesn t show any of its special folders because you, as the Web designer, should never need to modify them. FrontPage does the modifica tion automatically, silently, and unobtrusively. One FrontPage-based Web site can contain another. A site that contains another Web site is a parent, and the Web site it contains is a child or a subweb. A site that has no parent is a root Web site. There are no concrete rules or technical requirements that dictate how many Web sites a server should have or what they should contain. Certain principles do, however, apply:
