site. To do this, browse www.microsoft.com/frontpage/downloads/ and then click the FrontPage Server Extensions link. Regardless of whether you install the FrontPage Server Extensions or SharePoint Team Services, checking Microsoft s Web site for hot fixes and new versions is to your advantage. You can install the FrontPage desktop software, a Web server, and the FrontPage server extensions all on one machine. Figure 5-4 illustrates this arrangement.

Figure 5-4. The FrontPage 2003 client and a Web server used for authoring can reside either on separate computers or on the same computer.
Because Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional support at most one Web server, installing the FrontPage Server Extensions applies the extensions to that server. Windows 2000 Server and Windows .NET Server can run any number of Web servers, and these can support any combination of non-extended servers, FrontPage-extended Web servers, and SharePoint Team Services Web servers.
For more information about installing the FrontPage Server Extensions, refer to, Obtaining and Installing the FrontPage Server Extensions, in Appendix P.
Extending a Web server creates a single Web site that includes the server s entire existing content. The root Web site s administrator will initially be the Web server s administrator. The root Web administrator can then create subwebs either new, empty subwebs or subwebs covering existing content and grant appropriate permissions for administration, authoring, and browsing.

Appreciating FrontPage Web Sites
The natural FrontPage way of doing things is to first create a Web site and then put pages in it. This is often confusing at first, and for two quite logical reasons. First, FrontPage-based Web sites are rather abstract entities. Second, the need to manage and organize Web pages might not be obvious when you don t yet have any Web pages!
Understanding FrontPage-Based Web Sites 3, Managing Web Sites, described a variety of features that FrontPage can provide only by treating your files and folders as a group (that is, as a FrontPage-based Web site). In all, the features FrontPage offer for a Web site fall into these general categories:
Correcting hyperlink locations when you relocate or rename the target files Automatically creating site maps and other kinds of Web pages based on Web content Including one file within another, and adjusting hyperlinks so that links in the
included content are correct even though the pages that include them reside in different folders
Scanning for errors and omissions Finding and replacing text throughout a group of pages Reporting activity statistics Stopping one designer from changing a given page before another designer has
finished with it
Recording who last changed each file in a Web site Maintaining task lists Intelligently transferring files from one site to another
Altogether, these features provide a powerful incentive to deal with Web pages as members of a FrontPage-based Web site and not as individual files.
In Summary
This chapter introduced the operating concepts of FrontPage-based Web sites and explained how they can be valuable to you, the Web designer. Hopefully, it convinced you that the first step in creating any group of Web pages is to create a FrontPage-based Web. The next chapter explains in some detail the procedures for creating, configuring, and deleting FrontPage-based Web sites.

Describing FrontPage-based Web sites and justifying their existence might be very interesting or not but the essence of understanding Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 is knowing how to create them and start using them. The use of FrontPage-based Web sites permeates almost everything described in this book. This chapter therefore explains in some detail how to create FrontPage-based Web sites. When creating a new Web site, you should think in terms of first creating a site in FrontPage, and then filling it with all the Web pages, pictures, and other files that constitute a working unit. If you d rather read about creating individual Web pages, jump ahead to Part 3, Editing Basic Page Content.
