Creating and Using FrontPage Web Sites Note FrontPage doesn t prompt for parent Web site account information under three cir cumstances: first, if you re creating a disk-based Web site; second, if your Web server has no security in effect; and third, if your computer automatically supplies a password from a previously successful network or HTTP logon. If you specify a Windows SharePoint Services Web server and a template that won t run on that platform, a dialog box such as the following will appear:

In either case, your options are to use a different template or locate a compatible server. If you chose a wizard in step 4, FrontPage now prompts you for additional input. Figure 6-4, for example, shows one screen from the Corporate Presence Web Wizard. Answer the ques tions to the best of your ability, but don t agonize you can always delete the new Web site and start over. In fact, you should expect to delete the new Web site and start over several times until you get the results you want. Note When creating a new Web site on a given server, FrontPage uses that server s default page name as the file name of the new Web site s home page.

When it finishes building the new Web site, FrontPage displays it, as shown in Figure 6-5.

Naming FrontPage-Based Web Sites
You can name a FrontPage-based Web site anything that s valid as a folder name on your disk or Web server, but the following restrictions will minimize later problems: Use only lowercase letters or numbers. Don t use any spaces or special characters. Create a name that s meaningful, but no longer than 8 or 10 characters. You should choose a Web site name, folder names, and file names for your Web site that are valid on any server that will host it. This is one reason to avoid special characters, spaces, and uppercase letters when choosing these names.
The difference between wizards and templates lies in their degree of automation. A template is relatively static and preformatted; a wizard prompts you for local information and then custom-builds your site accordingly. The Corporate Presence Web Wizard, for example, dis plays 15 pages of prompts for information such as company name, company address, color scheme, and background, which affect the resulting site. It also presents lists of pages you can choose to generate or not. Although detailed discussion of these wizard prompts is beyond the scope of this book, the prompts are fairly self-explanatory, and there s on-screen Help for each one. Figure 6-8 shows that the Corporate Presence Web Wizard has created site parameters for changeable information and Tasks view items to remind you to finish the Web site s pages.
For more information about Tasks view, refer to Working with Tasks View, on page 1015.
Figure 6-9 shows FrontPage displaying the Corporate Presence home page that the wizard generated; notice the boilerplate text suggesting information you should enter under each heading. This Web site s appearance resulted from specifying the Journal theme while run ning the wizard, but you can change themes at will by using the Theme task pane.
For more information about topics mentioned in this section, refer to: 20, Using FrontPage Themes Using Link Bars with Navigation View, on page 348 Using Site Parameters and the Substitution Component, on page 759 Using the Include Page Component, on page 750.
