Converting a folder to a Web site doesn t remove or modify any existing files. It does, however, add a great many files. If you change your mind about making this folder a diskbased Web site site, removing all these files can be a nuisance. If you think you might change your mind, make sure you have a good backup of the folder in question, or do your work on a copy.

1 Creating A New Blank Web Site. The preceding section, Creating a Web Site for New
Content, explained how to do this.
2 Associating a remote site with the new local site from step 1. 16, Publishing
Your FrontPage-Based Web Site, will explain this procedure in detail.
3 Copying the remote site to the local site. 16 explains this process as well.

The Import Web Wizard can populate a new Web site with content from any of these sources.
A FrontPage disk-based Web site on your hard disk or on a network file server. A FrontPage server-based Web site on that resides on any Web server.
Part 2: Planning and Organizing Your Web Site
Creating and Using FrontPage Web Sites
A Windows SharePoint Services Web site that resides on any Web server.
Any Web site consisting of files accessible by FTP.
Any Web site consisting of files accessible by WebDAV.
Any Web site you can access with a browser.
Create local copies of any Web sites you access by FTP or WebDAV. If you attempt to open an WebDAV or FTP as a FrontPage based Web, FrontPage responds by starting the Import Web Wizard. Consider this a gentle reminder that to update a site, you should create a local copy, update it, and then publish your changes back to the original location.
In all cases but the last, FrontPage can populate a new Web site from an existing site with 100% accuracy. This is possible because FrontPage uses its so-called publishing features, which are the fastest and most accurate way to copy a Web site from one location to another. Fortunately, the publishing features in FrontPage 2003 are more flexible and easier to use than ever before. The last case is a last resort for importing Web sites you can t access any other way. The sidebar titled Importing Pages by Imitating a Browser explains the limitations of this approach.
Importing Pages by Imitating a Browser
FrontPage can download the contents of almost any Web site by imitating a browser and saving the resulting files in a FrontPage based web site. Here s how this process works.
1 FrontPage requests the home page, just as a browser would. It also requests any pic
tures and other files the home page uses.
2 Next, FrontPage checks the home page for hyperlinks within the same site, then
downloads those pages and their support files as well.
3 Finally, FrontPage check the pages from step 2 for hyperlinks, downloads those
pages and their support files, and repeats the process until no more pages remain or until FrontPage reaches a limit you specify. In almost every case, this process doesn t achieve the same results as retrieving files directly from the Web server s file system. For one thing, the site might contain files that don t appear in any URLs. For another, if the site contains any ASP or ASP .NET pages, any Web Part Pages, any Web Parts, or any other executable content, you ll receive the results of executing that content and not the executable code itself.
6
If you can access your existing site by any of these means, the following procedure will copy it into a new or existing FrontPage Web site located anywhere you want.
Part 2: Planning and Organizing Your Web Site
Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out

2 When the Web Site Templates dialog box shown previously in Figure 6-2 appears,
make sure the General tab is selected and then select the Import Web Wizard icon.
3 Under Options, the Specify The Location Of The New Web Site box controls where
the new Web site will reside. Specify a location as follows.
: If you want the new Web site to reside on a local disk or a file server, specify a
drive letter and path.
: If you want the new Web to reside on a FrontPage or SharePoint extended Web
server (even one running on the local computer) specify an http:// location. You should also check the status of the Add To Current Web Site check box.
: If no Web site was open was open in FrontPage when you started this procedure,
