Formatting Documents Using Templates, Wizards, Add-Ins, and XML Schemas item is created such as a form, a network place, or a Web page in accordance with your answers. The aim of a wizard is to create a foundation for a document. After the document is created, you fill in the gaps with more detailed information. By default, wizards are accessible through the Templates dialog box with document tem plates. You can easily identify wizards in the Templates dialog box because wizard icons include a magic wand. To open a wizard, you simply double-click the wizard of your choice. To work through a wizard, you follow the instructions on the screen. For example, the Wel come screen for the Memo Wizard (available in the Memos tab in the Templates dialog box) is shown in Figure 16-10. The wizard steps are listed on the left side of the screen; the current step is shown in bold green text. By referring to this area while you work, you can follow your progress throughout the process. Note that not all wizards provide this step-by-step display.

Another way you can modify your Word environment is to use add-ins. An add-in is a supplemental program that adds custom commands or custom features to Word. Like global templates, some add-ins can be loaded for the current session only or whenever you start Word. For loading instructions, see Loading Global Templates, on page 502. In addition to Microsoft Office addins (which are available when you install Word or from the Office Online Web site), your system can be configured to use Component Object Model (COM) add-ins, which are usually designed by developers and solutions providers. You view and control COM add-ins a little differently than Microsoft add-ins and global templates, as described later in this part of the chapter. Examples of typical add-ins offered by Microsoft and third-party developers and vendors include the following:
