The HTTP pr ot ocol on w hich y ou build ASP.NET solut ions doesn t ret ain inform at ion about Web pages bet w een successive round- t r ips from t he browser t o t he serv er. Therefore, ASP.NET offers var ious solut ions for convey ing inform at ion about pr ior visit s t o a Web server. Microsoft uses t he t erm session st at e m anagem ent t o describe t he cont ext of a v isit by a Web page t o a Web serv er . I n Web applicat ions, Web serv ers don t t ypically ret ain dat a on a page bet ween round- t r ips; t his is because of t he serv ers use of t he HTTP pr ot ocol. Ther efor e, on t wo separat e round- t rips from a browser t o a serv er , t he ser ver has no built - in way t o det erm ine w het her t he page is fr om t he sam e user. This st at eless charact er ist ic of Web pages is one im port ant r eason w hy a single Web serv er can handle a large num ber of request s from m any different users. On t he ot her hand, your Web applicat ions will t ypically need t o w ork around t he st at eless charact er ist ic of Web pages so t hat Web ser vers can rem em ber inform at ion about a session w it h a user from one request t o t he next . Ther e ar e t wo basic approaches t o m aint aining t he st at e of a session bet ween round- t r ips of a page t o a Web serv er. First , y ou can st or e inform at ion on t he browser s com put er and pass it on a Web page t o t he Web ser ver. This approach im pr ov es scalabilit y by r eliev ing t he Web serv er of handling t his session st at e dat a. The drawback of t his approach is t hat inform at ion t hat y ou pass on a Web page is available t o be r ead by unaut hor ized indiv iduals while t he page is in t ransit bet ween a br owser workst at ion and t he Web serv er . Second, y ou can st ore inform at ion on a Web serv er or anot her com put er t o which t he Web server has access. You can nor m ally specify variables and m aint ain values associat ed wit h t hem ov er t he life of a session or an applicat ion. Ther e are advant ages t o each approach ( Session or Applicat ion var iables) , but Session var iables are m ore com m only used in m any pract ical Web dev elopm ent pr oj ect s. Se rve r - Side Se ssion St a t e M an ag em e n t You can t hink of Applicat ion var iables as global var iables t hat perm it m ult iple users of an applicat ion t o share access t o dat a on a single Web serv er. While m ult iple users can access an Applicat ion v ariable, t hese variables ar e v isible only t o users running t hat applicat ion on t he ser ver used t o cr eat e t he var iable. Use Applicat ion var iables for frequent ly used values t hat don t change oft en. Applicat ion var iables have a lifet im e associat ed wit h t he durat ion of an applicat ion. When an applicat ion shut s down, t he var iable values, which r eside in m em ory , ar e lost . I f you need t o persist t he values beyond t he lifet im e of an applicat ion, consider saving t he variables t o a st orage m edium at per iodic int ervals. Because m ult iple users hav e access t o Applicat ion variables, it is im port ant t o m inim ize conflict s bet w een users. Such conflict s can slow an applicat ion. Session variables allow t he t rack ing of var iable v alues wit hin a session for an applicat ion on a Web serv er. Wit h t hese var iables, y our applicat ions can m aint ain separat e set s of values for each user of an applicat ion. Because your applicat ions m aint ain separat e values for each user, t her e is no issue of conflict s bet ween users. Therefore, y ou can use Session var iables in sit uat ions t hat r equire frequent updat es for indiv idual users. You can st ore Session v ariables in pr ocess on a Web serv er as in ASP. I n addit ion, you can st or e Session v ariables out of process on a st and- alone rem ot e Windows serv er, such as Window s 2000 Serv er, or on a SQL Ser ver inst ance. These lat t er t wo opt ions are an ASP.NET innovat ion. The abilit y t o st or e Session variables out of process allows Session var iables t o hav e a scope t hat ext ends acr oss m ult iple Web serv ers running an applicat ion or ev en r est art s of a Web serv er. See t he SessionSt at eMode Enum erat ion t opic in t he Visual St udio .NET docum ent at ion for det ails on set t ing t he m ode for a Session variable in t he code behind a Web page. By default , Session var iables are in pr ocess. This in- pr ocess set t ing y ields super ior perform ance, alt hough it doesn t ext end t he scope in t he sam e way t hat out - of- pr ocess st orage does.

Clie n t - Side Session St a t e M an a ge m e n t Ther e ar e four approaches t o session st at e m anagem ent w it h client - side t ools. These are cookies, hidden variables, query st rings, and v iew st at e. View st at e is a new opt ion int roduced wit h ASP.NET. Cook ies are pr im arily an ident ificat ion t echnology. Web applicat ions can read cook ies residing on a br owser s workst at ion t o det erm ine w ho t he user is and cust om ize t he int erface based on a knowledge of t he user s ident it y or m em bership in a group. For exam ple, y ou can expose users t o I T books inst ead of elect r onics pr oduct s if t he users prev iously im plicit ly or explicit ly ex pressed a preference for seeing I T books. Cook ies ar e ver sat ile because t hey can cont ain inform at ion specific t o a user, session, or client . One especially significant weak ness of cook ies is t hat users can configure t heir browsers not t o st or e t hem . Ther efor e, y our applicat ion cannot count on t heir availabilit y. Anot her w eak ness of cook ies is t heir suscept ibilit y t o t am per ing because t hey r eside on a user s hard drive. Query st r ings ar e nam e and value pairs appended t o t he end of a URL. These nam e- value pairs can cont ain inform at ion about anyt hing, including t he st at e of a session, such as a user id value. You m ust specifically assign t he get set t ing t o t he m et hod at t r ibut e for a form on a Web page t o pass var iables v ia a query st ring. Query st r ings ar e part icular ly useful for exchanging inform at ion bet ween Web pages even if t he Web pages belong t o different applicat ions. Because query st r ings r eside at t he end of a URL, t hey offer no secur it y . Quer y st rings ar e available t o t he or iginat ing and dest inat ion com put ers as well as t o any one w ho can v iew t he HTTP header for a page as it hops bet ween com put ers from an originat ing com put er t o a dest inat ion com put er. I n addit ion, t he m ax im um num ber of charact ers is oft en rest r ict ed t o 255. However, quer y st r ings are a fast and easy t echnique t o im plem ent for sit uat ions in w hich you need t o exchange a relat iv ely sm all am ount of session st at e inform at ion across m ult iple applicat ions and wher e secur it y isn t a cr it ical issue. Hidden fields offer a t radit ional t echnique for ex changing dat a bet ween a Web page and a Web serv er so t hat t he field value isn t render ed on t he Web page. You m ust specifically assign t he post set t ing for t he m et hod at t r ibut e of a Web page s form t o pass var iables via a hidden field. Alt hough a hidden field isn t render ed on a Web page, it is st ill readily available if you v iew t he HTML for t he page in a t ext edit or . The t erm hidden m erely r eflect s t he fact t hat t he field doesn t appear on a Web page in a browser . View st at e is an innovat ion int roduced wit h ASP.NET for exchanging inform at ion bet ween a Web page and a Web ser ver. ASP.NET applicat ions r out inely st ore inform at ion about t he cont rols on a Web page in a v iew st at e field for t he page. Micr osoft enables ASP.NET dev elopers t o t ak e advant age of t his built - in field. The view st at e field on a Web page updat es at bot h t he br owser and Web- ser ver sides of a page s round- t r ip. View st at e var iables, including t he built - in ones and y our cust om ones, ar e conv ert ed t o st r ings, hashed, and st or ed in a hidden field on t he Web page. Therefore, v alues hav e som e encrypt ing, but t he dat a is available for t am pering ( and decr ypt ing) . As w it h t he ot her client - side t echniques for m aint aining st at e, t his t echnique doesn t consum e any serv er- side r esources. I n addit ion, t he synt ax is sim ilar t o t he synt ax for specify ing Session variables. Ther efor e, ASP dev elopers w ho ar e fam iliar wit h t echniques for using Session variables can apply sim ilar t echniques for t ak ing advant age of cust om view st at e variables.
