Windows programmers have used Graphics Device Interface (GDI) functions for years to create graphic shapes, bitmaps, metafiles, color palettes, and so on. Types in the System.Drawing namespace give you a way to access these functions using an objectoriented programming model, which simplifies graphic programming enormously and minimizes the risk of resource leaking (a serious problem with all graphic-intensive applications). Typically, you ll use GDI+ classes in Windows Forms, but nothing prevents you from working with them in server-side ASP.NET applications. For example, you might create an ASP.NET application that creates a chart on the server and sends it to the client in an HTML page, or a Web service application that performs sophisticated graphic pro cessing on bitmaps submitted in input.

Even if Microsoft is actively helping developers jump on the .NET bandwagon, they don t expect that the thousands of applications written in recent years should be tossed aside. More realistically, large applications will be ported to .NET gradually, for exam ple, as developers write new components that interact with the existing code. Another problem that developers have to face is that all the devices from third-party hardware manufacturers are provided as traditional or COM DLLs, so there must be a way to access them from managed code. This holds true also for functions in Windows DLLs that haven t yet been encapsulated in .NET classes. The .NET Framework gives you a couple of technologies that help you write code that interacts with the so-called legacy applications, written as traditional DLL or COM com ponents. The portion of the runtime known as Platform Invoke or PInvoke is in charge of calling functions embedded in traditional DLLs, including Windows DLLs. The portion of the runtime known as COM Interoperability is in charge of exchanging data with COM components. COM Interoperability works in both directions: you can consume a COM component from a .NET application, but you can also expose a .NET component to a COM application, for example, an application authored with Visual Basic 6.

In a nutshell, remoting is the managed code counterpart of Distributed COM (DCOM); it lets you access objects located on another machine. More precisely, remoting lets you access and code against objects located in a different AppDomain whether the other AppDomain is running on the same or another computer. .NET doesn t use COM; communication with the other process or machine occurs through channels of a different nature, such as TCP or HTTP channels. The classes that help you manage remoting are located in the System.Runtime.Remoting namespace or in one of its nested namespaces.

While the bulk of managed classes are in the System namespace or one of the namespaces nested inside System, you might find yourself working with other classes that don t belong to this namespace. Classes in the Microsoft.Win32 namespace are specific to the Windows platform and will never be ported to other operating systems. These classes encapsulate Windowsspecific objects, such as the registry or system events. The Microsoft.VisualBasic namespace gathers classes that help you write Visual Basic .NET code with a syntax as close to Visual Basic 6 as possible. In most cases, classes in this namespace duplicate functionality offered by other classes in the .NET Framework, so you have a choice. You can use them to retain the good old Visual Basic flavor, or you can opt for the more generic classes in the System namespace. The former approach minimizes time spent in producing real-world .NET applications, while the latter one is preferable if you plan to learn other .NET languages, such as C#. In this book I ll use both approaches, starting with the classes in the Microsoft.VisualBasic namespace and then exploring in depth the more generic .NET classes, which are often more powerful and versatile. I know it has been a long chapter and you have read a lot of new concepts and seen very little code. Believe me, I needed this chapter to introduce the most important fea tures of .NET. You ll see plenty of code in the following chapters, starting with the next chapter, in which you ll learn about new syntax and data types in Visual Basic .NET.
