Visual Studio .NET provides a superb environment for both creating and debugging SQL Server s stored procedures. You ll find all the commands you might need in the Data Connections subtree of the Server Explorer window. These commands are repli; cated under the SQL Servers node in the Servers branch, which also gives you access to common administrative and management tasks, such as registering a new SQL Server, creating a database, or changing a login. You can customize what you see in the Server Explorer window and what you can do with the database from the Database Tools page in the Options dialog box that you reach from the Tools menu. You edit a stored procedure by double-clicking on the corresponding element under the Stored Procedures node in the Server Explorer window. Other commands in the context menu or in the Database top-level menu let you create script for elements in the database as well as create a new table, diagram, stored procedure, inline function, scalar function, or table-valued function. Visual Studio .NET offers many helpful tools for editing a stored procedure or a func; tion, and all of them are available from the context menu that appears with a right-click of the mouse. For example, you can insert a piece of SQL that you design with the Query Builder, or run the selected SQL statement and see the result in the Output win; dow. (See Figure 21-3.) When you save the stored procedure or the function, Visual Studio .NET checks its syntax and rejects malformed SQL statements. Debugging a stored procedure is also quite simple. For starters, you can set breakpoints inside a stored procedure as you d do with regular Visual Basic code, and you can even create conditional breakpoints with the Breakpoint Properties command that appears if you right-click on the red bullet that marks the breakpoint or from the Breakpoints win; dow that you reach from the Windows submenu of the Debug top-level menu. Right-click on the procedure node and select either the Run Stored Procedure or the Step Into Stored Procedure command to execute a stored procedure. If the procedure takes arguments, a dialog box will allow you to enter them. While a stored procedure is being debugged you can hover the mouse on scalar variables to display their values in a Tooltip.

By default, breakpoints in a stored procedure are enabled only if you execute the stored procedure in stand-alone mode that is, by means of the Run Stored Procedure or the Step Into Stored Procedure commands just described. In most cases, however, you want to debug the stored procedure in the context of the running applications.
