Most elements in this file are self-explanatory. ImageUrl is the URL of the image; Nav igateUrl is the URL of the page that s displayed if the user clicks on the banner; Alter nateText is the text used if the image is unavailable; Keyword is the (optional) category assigned to this banner; Impressions is a number that affects how often the banner is displayed. (For example, in the preceding advertisement file, the first banner appears twice as often as the second one.) Using the AdRotator control is quite simple because it exposes only three properties:

The AdvertisementFile property is the path to the advertisement file in XML format. This file must reside on the same Web server. The KeywordFilter property specifies a keyword and forces the control to select only the banners that are associated with this keyword. If the XML file defines no banners with this keyword, the control doesn t display anything. The Target property sets or gets the browser window or frame that displays the content of the Web page that appears when the banner is clicked.

Notice that you can specify only one keyword in both the XML file and the KeywordFilter property. The control exposes the AdCreated event, which fires each time a new banner is displayed. You might trap this event to keep a log of which banners were actually displayed. The AdRotator control doesn t offer any support for detecting when the user clicks a banner and jumps to the site pointed to by the NavigateUrl property. Implementing this feature is simple, however: instead of pointing directly to the site s URL, you can have the NavigateUrl property point to a page on your site that reads the target URL on the query string, updates a log file, and finally redirects the browser to the real destination. Here s an example of how you might retouch the XML file to redirect clicks to your redirector.aspx page:

The Xml control is simply a component that lets you implement XSL transformation using a declarative code style instead of explicitly creating an XmlDocument and an XslTransform object (as we did in 23). To use this control, you typically need to set the source XML document that contains the data to be displayed and the XSL document that contains the XSL style sheet that specifies how data must be rendered.

Web Forms and Controls
You can specify the XML source document in three ways: by assigning an XmlDocu ment object to the Document property, by assigning a file path to the DocumentSource property, or by storing the raw XML data in the DocumentContent property. Likewise, you can specify the XSL style sheet by assigning an XslTransform object to the Transform property or a file path to the TransformSource property. The only other property, TransformArgumentList, serves to pass arguments to the style sheet. Here s a simple example that uses the employees.xslt XSL file to render the data in the employees.xml data file:
Xml1.DocumentSource = employees.xml" Xml1.TransformSource = employees.xslt
Note After releasing version 1.0 of the .NET Framework, Microsoft created an additional set
of ASP .NET server controls known as Internet Explorer Web Controls. This set includes the TreeView, Toolbar, MultiPage, and TabString controls. These controls work well on all browsers but they really shine in Internet Explorer 5.5 and later. (For example, in this version no postback occurs when the user expands a node of the TreeView control.) As of this writing, these controls could be downloaded from the following URL: http://asp.net/IEWebControls/Download.aspx.
Formatting and Outlining in Visual Studio .NET
Before we move to more advanced topics, I want to draw your attention to the format ting and outlining capabilities of the HTML editor in Visual Studio .NET. If you don t need any server-side functionality, you can just drop HTML elements on the page s surface, as you d do with any HTML editor. In fact, when you re in design mode, four new top-level menus appear in Visual Studio .NET:
The Format menu lets you apply standard formatting to selected text, justify text, align controls, and so on. (See Figure 24-19.) The Insert menu lets you insert <DIV>, <SPAN>, and <FORM> elements, images, and <A> elements (bookmarks). It also lets you transform a portion of text into a hyperlink. The Table menu lets you create a new table, add and delete rows, columns, cells, and so on. (See Figure 24-20.) The Frames menu lets you add and delete frames.
Instead of applying separate format operations to an HTML element, you can select it and choose Style Builder from the Format menu or in the shortcut menu to display the Style Builder dialog box shown in Figure 24-21. (You can also reach this dialog from the Style element in the Properties window.) The dialog box is a sophisticated builder for the HTML style attribute of an element, and it lets you create font properties, foreground and background colors, text alignment, flow or absolute position, edges, and bulleted lists.
