The values of the buffer, enableSessionState, enableViewState, enableViewStateMac, autoEventWireup, or smartNavigation attribute affect the page properties or directive of the same name. The last two attributes define the code-behind class that pages and user controls inherit by default. These are the default values as defined in machine.config:
Drawing Code 128B In VS .NET

The enableSessionState also can be set to read-only, but it makes sense to do so only inside secondary web.config files. The autoEventWireup attribute is reset to false inside the @Page directive of all .aspx pages created inside Visual Studio .NET.

The most intriguing feature that you can control with these settings is process recy cling, which lets you automatically launch another worker process after a timeout, after processing a given number of requests, or when free memory goes below the specified threshold. (I briefly mentioned application recycling in the section The HttpApplica tionState Class in 26.) Table 27-1 contains a brief explanation of the attributes in this tag. I covered the username and password attributes in the ASP.NET Impersonation section. Unlike other settings in configuration files, settings in this section aren t applied until IIS restarts.

Internet Applications
Table 27-1
Main Attributes of the processModel Configuration Tag
Name enable Description Tells whether ASP.NET runs outside IIS (true, the default) or inside IIS (false). If you change this set ting, you re going to miss many of the advantages of the process model mechanism. The Windows account under which the worker process runs. The default is ASPNET under Win dows 2000 and XP, machine under Windows Server 2003. The password for the identity adopted for the worker process. The special System and Machine accounts don t require a password. The period of inactivity after which the worker process is shut down. The default value is infinite. The timeout after which ASP.NET forces the shutdown of the working process that refuses to shut down gracefully. The default value is 5 seconds. The number of minutes after which the worker process is automatically shut down and restarted. The number of requests processed before the worker process is automatically shut down and restarted. The default value is infinite. The percentage of the total system memory that the worker process can consume before being automatically recycled. The default is 60 percent. The interval after which the process is restarted if there hasn t been a response even though there are requests in the queue. The default value is 3 minutes. How much time must elapse after the last restart to cure a deadlock before the process is restarted to cure a deadlock again. This setting prevents prob lems with processes that require a long start-up time. Its value can be infinite or a timeout in the format hh:mm:ss. How often ASP.NET pings the worker process to check whether it s active and restart it if it isn t. The default is 30 seconds.

ASP.NET Security and Configuration
Table 27-1
Main Attributes of the processModel Configuration Tag
Name pingTimeout Description How long an ASP.NET ping waits for an unrespon sive worker process before restarting it. The default is 5 seconds. The maximum number of worker threads that each CPU can run; it must be in the range 5 to 100. The default is 25. The maximum number of IO threads that each CPU can run. It must be in the range 5 to 100. Default is 25. If true, the application works as a Web garden, and the operating system schedules CPU usage. If false, the cpuMask affects CPU usage. A bit-coded value that specifies which CPUs on a Multi-CPU system can run a copy of the worker process. The authentication level for COM security; can be None, Connect (default), Call, Pkt, PktIntegrity, PktPrivacy, or Default. The COM impersonation level; can be Anonymous, Identify, Impersonate, Delegate, or Default. The period after which ASP.NET checks that the client for a queue request is still connected. An ASP.NET page can check whether the client is con nected by using the Request.IsClientConnected property. The number of requests allowed in the queue before ASP.NET returns a 503 Server Too Busy error. Default is 5000.
