number and arrangement of items that the Web Part displays in the browser. But you have no direct access to the HTML tags that the Web Part sends the browser. Instead, all Microsoft Web Parts (and most third-party Web Parts) identify each type of element in a Web Part with a standard cascading style sheet (CSS) selector. A selector, in this sense, is the name of a style. For example:

.ms-toolbar
8
Is the name of the style that controls the appearance of text in the toolbars for SharePoint lists.
8
table.ms-toolbar
Is the name of the style that controls the gradient background in the toolbars for SharePoint lists.
Fortunately, the definition of these style names resides outside the Web Part, usually in a style sheet file that s linked into the Web page that displays the Web Part. To change the appearance of a list toolbar, you don t change the HTML that the list view Web Part creates. Instead, you change the definition in the linked style sheet file. For example, here s the default configuration for the two styles mentioned above:
.ms-toolbar { font-family: verdana; font-size: .68em; text-decoration: none; color: #003399; } table.ms-toolbar { background-image: url("/_layouts/images/toolgrad.gif"); background-repeat: repeat-x; border: 1px solid #95b7f3; background-color: #9ebff6; }
Physically, these definitions reside in a file named ows.css, located on the SharePoint server at this path: <drive>\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\1033\STYLES Windows SharePoint Services maps the start of this path, up to and including the LAYOUTS folder, to a virtual folder named /_layouts and located at the Web server s root.

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out
Do You Believe in Ghosts
Windows SharePoint Services doesn t store most Web pages, picture files, and other page components in the Web server s file system. Instead, it stores them as records in a content database. FrontPage and, for the most part, the browser makes it appear that these files reside in a file system, but this is an illusion. Certain files, however, are exceptions. They appear to be in the content database, but reside instead in the server s file system. In SharePoint terminology, these files are ghosted.

Most SharePoint sites have a _layouts folder and, as it turns out, this entire folder tree is ghosted. Windows SharePoint Services makes one physical copy of this folder tree appear to reside locally in each Web site. This has two advantages: It saves a lot of disk space. If you have 10,000 Web sites, you don t have 10,000 copies of the _layouts folder in your content database. You have one copy on disk. It simplifies the task of making global changes to Web sites. Any change you make to the <drive>\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\60\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS folder in the server s file system instantly shows up in every Web site. If you modify a ghosted file through FrontPage or a browser, Windows SharePoint Services un-ghosts that instance of the file: that is, it saves the modified version directly in the content database. That way, the site you edited uses the modified version, and all other sites continue to use the ghosted version. Most ghosted files and folders, however, aren t accessible via FrontPage. This is why you might see the _layouts folder in the browser s address bar, but not in the FrontPage Folder List or Folders view.
In a site that uses the default SharePoint theme, each page will contain a linked stylesheet tag like this:
<link REL="stylesheet" Type="text/css" HREF="/_layouts/1033/styles/ows.css">
By using this scheme, every list toolbar in the site will get its appearance from the .ms-toolbar and table.ms-toolbar style rules in the ows.css file. And since they all get their appearance from the same rule, they all look alike. Very cool. If you don t like the appearance that the ows.css files give your site, you can choose a different file or create a new one. Any such file, however, needs to include over three hundred style rules like .ms-toolbar and table.ms-toolbar. As a result, most SharePoint designers use one of these approaches.
Use the default theme. Use a theme that comes with Windows SharePoint Services. To do this:
