2 Click Site Settings and, under Customization, choose Apply Theme To Site. 3 Choose the theme you want and then click Apply. Use a theme that comes with Microsoft FrontPage. The section titled Using FrontPage Themes later in this chapter will explain how to do this. Use FrontPage to modify a theme, save it with a new name, and apply it to a site. Purchase a third-party theme. However, if this seems attractive, make sure you buy a theme specifically designed for Windows SharePoint Services. Older themes typically contain only a fraction of the selectors a SharePoint site requires.

Many organizations will wish to change the default SharePoint theme so that it uses standard company colors and logos. However, it s not good practice to change the ows.css file itself. Because ows.css is a system file, service packs and patches may overwrite it unexpectedly and your updates will be lost. Instead, save your changes in new file, and then modify a file named ONET.XML to make the new file the SharePoint default. To do this: <drive>\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\TEMPLATE\1033\STS\XML.

2 Open the ONET.XML file in Microsoft Notepad or any other text editor. 3 Find the <Project> tag and add an AlternateCSS attribute. For example, change:
<Project Title="Team Web Site" ListDir="Lists" xmlns:ows="Microsoft SharePoint">
<Project AlternateCSS="/_layouts/1033/styles/local.css" Title="Team Web Site" ListDir="Lists" xmlns:ows="Microsoft SharePoint">
Where local.css is the name of your alternate default style sheet file. If you re operating a farm of SharePoint Web servers, you ll need to make this change on each one. There is, however, a catch to all this. Because ONET.XML is a system file, service packs and patches may overwrite it unexpectedly and, once again, your updates will be lost. To guard against this, always keep backup copies of ows.css, onet.xml, or any other SharePoint system file you modify.

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out
Introducing FrontPage Themes
The idea of themes isn t new to Window SharePoint Services. For years, FrontPage has provided themes as a way of automatically and uniformly formatting pages and sites. The designer picks the theme and FrontPage does the rest. Windows SharePoint Services uses the same theme technology as FrontPage. In many cases, therefore, you can solve SharePoint design issues by opening the SharePoint site in FrontPage and modifying its theme. For example, you could choose a different theme, modify the existing theme, or create and apply a new theme. There are, however, some differences in the way FrontPage and Windows SharePoint Services approach themes.
Originally, FrontPage themes had just a few dozen style rules. A theme compatible with

Windows SharePoint Services has over three hundred style rules.
The FrontPage user interface for modifying themes is heavily slanted toward FrontPage
features. For example, all the preview and WYSIWYG displays show FrontPage components, not SharePoint components.
FrontPage addresses themes one site at a time. Designers responsible for a SharePoint
server that supports hundreds or thousands of team members usually want to control themes on a server or top level site basis.
FrontPage has no features for modifying the themes that SharePoint team members
can apply through the SharePoint browser interface. In fact, neither does Windows SharePoint Services, except that by using a text editor you can manipulate configuration files directly on the SharePoint server. Despite these issues, FrontPage 2003 remains the best graphical environment for working with themes used in a SharePoint site. The next few sections walk you through the process of applying themes to existing pages or Web sites, and then cover the mechanics of customizing themes and creating new ones.
Using the Themes Task Pane
FrontPage can apply themes to a single page or to an entire Web site. Figure 8-5 shows the Theme task pane, the focal point for applying, customizing, and removing themes. To display this task pane, choose Theme from the Format menu or from the drop-down list in the title bar of any other task pane.
