If you open the template and change the contents of a non-editable region, FrontPage will offer to propagate that change to every page that uses the template. The terms editable and non-editable, by the way, reflect behavior in pages that use the template. When you open such a page, FrontPage won t let you change the non-editable regions in Design view. When you open the template itself, however, you can edit either type of region. Table 9-1 illustrates these concepts. 274

You can attach a Dynamic Web Template to any new or existing page. This is how a page begins using the template. If the page has existing content, FrontPage prompts for the name of the editable region that will receive it. Attaching a Dynamic Web Template dims most options on the General, Formatting, Advanced, and Language tabs of the Page Properties dialog box. It also dims the Style, Style Sheet Links, Shared Borders, and Background tabs on the Format menu. If you want to change these settings, modify the template and let FrontPage update the attached pages. If this would affect more pages than you want, you probably need two Dynamic Web Templates one for each set of appearance settings instead of one. If you include Page Banner components, Link Bar components, themes, styles, or linked styles sheets in a Dynamic Web Template, and then you attach the template to one or more Web pages, those components will behave as if you d added them directly to the Web page. If, for example, a Dynamic Web Template includes a Page Banner component, and then a Web page attaches that template, the Page Banner component will display the Web page s Navigation view name, and not the template s Navigation view name. The same is true for Link Bar Based On Navigation View components. This provides a way of globally propagating the location and style of a site s navigation links into each page, but controlling the content of those links externally.
Before using a Dynamic Web Template you must, of course, create it. Here s the procedure:
1 Open a new or an existing page in Design view. 2 Add or modify any content you want, but concentrate on the content that will appear in every page that attaches the template. In a new Dynamic Web Template, the entire page is, by default, non-editable. 3 Select the first area in the page you want to designate as editable. If the area you want contains no other content, add an empty paragraph so that you can select it. 4 Choose Dynamic Web Template from the Format menu, and then Click Manage Editable Regions. If FrontPage offers to save the page as a new Dynamic Web Template, click Yes.

Table 9-1 also illustrates that only non-editable areas receive new content when you update the template. In effect, all copies of a non-editable region remain in sync with the template. If any copies of editable regions remain in sync, however, it s simply a happy accident.

6 Click Add to make the region part of the template, and then click Close to close the Editable Regions dialog box. An orange border will surround the new editable region. 7 Repeat steps 3 through 6 for each additional editable region.
You can create as many, or as few, editable regions as you want. Presumably you ll want at least one so that each page using the template can present its own unique content. At the same time, there s usually no advantage in creating lots of small editable regions that touch each other. A single, larger editable area would work just as well. Here s the procedure for saving a Dynamic Web Template:
1 Choose Save As from the File menu. 2 When the Save As dialog box appears, select Dynamic Web Template (*.dwt) in the Save As Type box. 3 In the File Name box, specify a short, easy-to-remember name the same sort of name you d give any other Web page. The filename extension must be .dwt. 4 Click Save to save the template and close the dialog box.
