Because the id attribute also identifies the tag for use by scripts and other processes, you should never give two elements in the same page the same ID. This makes class selectors preferable for most uses.

This selector works somewhat like a class selector, except that it applies to a named element in your Web page. When you define the rule, you begin the name of an ID selector with a pound sign (#), like this:

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out The following rule makes all Heading 1 and Heading 2 text appear in boldface:
h1, h2 { font-weight: bold; }
The comma between the two selectors implies an or condition, meaning that the rule applies whenever the HTML tag is h1 or h2. Lack of a comma implies an and condition. The following rule applies only to italic text located within table cells:
td i { color: rgb(153,0,0); }
When coding a rule that specifies a type selector and a class selector, it s common to omit the space between the two selectors. The following rule, for example:
a.menu { background-color: #FFCCCC; color: black; }

would apply only to hyperlinks coded class="menu." Here s an example:
<a class="menu" href="http://www.microsoft.com">Microsoft</a>
Significantly, the preceding rule would not apply to either of these tags.
<a href="http://www.interlacken.com">Jim Buyens</a> <p class="menu">Hasty pudding</p>
The first tag isn t coded class="menu," and the second tag isn t a hyperlink. Pseudo-classes are another variation you may encounter (or use yourself). Pseudo-classes pertain to the state of an element rather than the element itself. When you define them, their names begin with a colon. Here are some examples:
:link :hover
applies to a hyperlink for which no record of a previous visit is available. applies to a hyperlink for which record of a previous visit is available.
:visited
applies while the Web visitor holds the mouse pointer over an element without activating it. applies while the Web visitor is activating an element: for example, while pointing to an element and holding down the mouse button. applies while an element has the focus: that is, while it accepts keyboard events or other forms of text input.
:active :focus
The most common use of pseudo-classes involves hyperlinks. The following rules, for example, produce a hyperlink rollover effect:
a.menu {background-color: #FFEEEE; color: #000000} a:hover.menu {background-color: #0000FF; color: #FFFF00}
The following hyperlink, for example:
<a class="menu" href="http://www.microsoft.com">Microsoft</a>
would appear pink with black text except when the mouse is over it. When the mouse passes over it, it would switch to blue with yellow text. 282

Locating Style Sheet Styles
You can specify CSS style information in the three general locations (or, if you prefer, the three levels) listed here:
9
Attached to a specific page element
You can assign CSS style properties to individual HTML elements. Styles applied this way are called inline styles. The following tag, for example, contains an inline style. The style= attribute can contain any valid CSS attributes, in CSS syntax.
<p style="margin:0"> </p>
If you display the Properties dialog box for any element on a Web page, and if that dialog box contains a Style button, clicking that button displays another dialog box that applies CSS properties (font, paragraph, border, numbering, and position) to that element. In Figure 9-14, for example, the Style button in the lower left corner controls CSS properties for whatever table cells the designer selected before displaying the Cell Properties dialog box. New Web designers often find inline styles easier to use than styles sheets, because they can apply styles directly to the text they want to affect. Experienced designers appreciate uniformity and ease of maintenance throughout a site; as a result, they usually prefer linked style sheet files.
Figure 9-14. The Style button in this dialog box controls CSS properties for the selected page element.
