Preload your button images Preloading button images ensures that changes to a button s appearance occur smoothly. If you don t preload images, the browser retrieves hovered and pressed images only when it first needs them, and this may incur a time delay. Preloading is usually the best choice, but it does have a drawback: The browser has to download all the button images even if it never displays them.
5 To specify the button background, select one of these options:
Make The Button A JPEG Image And Use This Background Color. Select this option if you want the button to have a solid color background. Use the nearby color drop-down list to specify the color you want. Make The Button A GIF Image And Use A Transparent Background. this option if you want the button to have a transparent background. If you re creating a new Interactive Button, the Overwrite Original Images check box will be dimmed. If you re modifying an existing Interactive Button, make sure this check box is checked. When you save a page that includes interactive buttons, FrontPage might display the Save Embedded Files dialog box. This occurs because FrontPage needs to save the three picture files each Interactive Button might display. It s best if you save the pictures for each Web page in a different folder; otherwise, the pictures from one page might overwrite those for another. To modify an existing button, display the Interactive Button dialog box using any of these methods:
Double-click the Interactive Button component. Right-click the Interactive Button component, and then choose Button Properties
from the shortcut menu.
Open the drop-down menu on the Interactive Button component s Quick Tag Selector
icon, and then choose Tag Properties. (The Quick Tag Selector icon will show an <img> tag.)
Select the Interactive Button component, and press Alt+Enter.
Then, configure the three tags as you would for a new button.

Scripting DHTML Behaviors
Many popular Web page features require Dynamic HTML programming; that is, JavaScript programming that runs on the browser. Fortunately, FrontPage 2003 provides a new Behaviors task pane that handles most such requirements without making you work with programming code at all. Figure 9-23 shows an example of this task pane. When the mouse passes over the Announcements link, an onmouseover Behavior will display an informative message in the gray-edged box to the right. The onmouseover behavior clears the box when the mouse moves elsewhere.
