3 In the Element Type drop-down list, select the type of element you want to modify. In order for an element type to appear, it must be present in your Web page and have an id attribute. 4 In the Element ID drop-down list, select the id of the element you want to modify. This list will display only elements of the type you specified in step 3, and that have id attributes. 5 To modify the textual content of an element, click the Add button at the right edge of the dialog box. The Font, Position, Borders, and Visibility buttons display dialog boxes for modifying those properties of the element you specified in step 4. 6 When the Insert Property dialog box shown in Figure 9-25 appears, specify a Property Name of innerText and a Property Value consisting of the text you want to display.

This dialog box can control any DHTML property of any element.
Specifying attribute names in this dialog box is somewhat tricky because you must specify the exact, case-sensitive attribute names that programmers use. These aren t the same names you d use in ordinary HTML or CSS code. For the most part, they re the same as CSS names except that initial capping replaces hyphens. The attribute name for font-family, for example, would be styles.fontFamily. The property name innerText refers to the text between an element s opening and closing tags. If you want to supply any HTML tags along with the text, use the innerHTML property.
7 Without leaving the Change Property dialog box, you can specify changes to as many properties as you want. The list in the center of the dialog box will continue to show more entries. To change an existing attribute entry, select it, and click Modify. To remove an attribute, select it, and click Remove.

Creating and Modifying Basic Site Features
8 When a script appears for the first time in the Behaviors list box, it usually has an event type of onclick. This is fine if you want a mouse click to trigger the script, but unfortunate in any other case. To recover: 8.1 Click the incorrect event name (for example, onclick). 8.2 Click the down arrow that appears next to the incorrect event name. 8.3 Select the event you want from the resulting list. For example, onmouseover events fire when the mouse passes over the trigger element, even if the Web visitor takes no other action.
Behaviors affecting one element disappear when you configure another
One thing the Change Property dialog box can t do is specify changes to more than one element. If you specify changes to one element, and then change the selection in the Eement Type or Element ID list, the dialog box will erase your entries for the first element! This argues strongly for the following rules: Once you ve specified property changes for an element, don t modify the Element Type or Element ID selections unless you want to discard the existing changes. To change the properties of more than one element, finish configuring the changes for the first element, and then click the Insert button on the Behaviors task pane and configure changes to the second element. Repeat until satisfied.
Figure 9-26 shows the finished page as it appears in a browser. As the mouse passes over each hyperlink, the text in the gray-edged box changes to provide guidance about that list. Because this is a Web Part page, it could also contain any Web Parts you decided to add. The Behaviors task pane generally creates results that work well in Internet Explorer 4 and later, and in Netscape Navigator 6 and later. Even so, you should test your results in each browser you care about. If a script failure produces obnoxious error messages or leaves visitors with no way to navigate the site, you might need to develop alternative pages and use Check Browser scripts to switch among them.
