In Summary
This chapter described a variety of ways you can use Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 to customize the look and feel of a SharePoint site. This included use of Navigation view, Link Bars, Page Banners, Cascading Style Sheets, Interactive Buttons, and Behaviors. The next chapter will explain how to create and modify SharePoint Data Sources and Data Views. These provide the means for Web Part pages to access SharePoint lists, SharePoint libraries, and external databases.

6 described how you can design your own SharePoint lists and libraries, how you can create multiple views of any list and library, and how you can choose to display different views, all using only a browser. These capabilities are impressive but, like any other technique, they have limits. One way of gaining more flexibility is, of course, to write your own Web Parts in Visual Studio .NET. Part VII will explain the basics of writing and deploying such Web Parts, but that approach requires significant programming skills. If you need more power than the Web-based design tools provide and less complexity than writing program code in Visual Studio, Microsoft FrontPage 2003 may provide just the balance you need. FrontPage 2003 has some great new features for working with data in SharePoint lists, SharePoint libraries, external databases, and Web services accessible through Windows SharePoint Services. Learning about these features is a three-step process.
In this chapter, you learn how to establish connections called data sources from a
SharePoint site to SharePoint lists and libraries, non-SharePoint databases, XML files, Web sites, and Web services.
In 11, you explore creating Data View Web Parts, which format and
display the contents of these data sources.
In 12, you become familiar with more advanced features of Data View
Web Parts. Best of all, none of this requires writing any program code at all. FrontPage provides all the commands and configuration you need within its graphical interface. Note
Throughout this chapter, and unless otherwise stated: The term library means a SharePoint document library, form library, or picture library. The term list means a SharePoint list, survey, or discussion board.

Designing Lists and Libraries
FrontPage can create and modify SharePoint lists and libraries with all the same capabilities that the browser interface provides. The advantage is that you don t have to leave FrontPage to make such changes, and you don t have to refresh the FrontPage display afterward. As shown in Figure 10-1, SharePoint lists and libraries appear in FrontPage as if they were folders with special icons.
List folders contain the list view pages and forms that support the parent list. If a list
permits attachments, it also has an Attachments subfolder that contains the attached files.
Library folders contain a folder tree of library documents, plus a Forms subfolder that

contains list view pages and forms. Picture Libraries also have a _t folder that contains thumbnails of each picture, and a _w folder that contains intermediate-sized versions of each picture.

SharePoint lists and libraries appear almost like folders in FrontPage.
You can delete a list or library just as if it were an ordinary file. For example, you can rightclick it and choose Delete, select it and press the Delete key, or select it and choose Delete from the Edit menu. The usual methods for renaming files and folders apply, as do the Copy and Cut commands. Curiously, you can t paste a SharePoint list or library into its own site. You can, however, copy a list or library from one site and paste it into another.

Modifying SharePoint Lists and Libraries
To modify a SharePoint list or library in FrontPage, display its properties just as you would for a normal file or folder. For example:
Right-click it and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. Select it and choose Properties from the File menu.
