Figure 10-16. You can t modify the data sources that Windows SharePoint Services creates automatically for lists and libraries. One option is to modify the list or library. Another is to create a new, modifiable data source that points to the same list.
If you find that you can t modify the data source property you want to change, you might need to create a new data source that accesses the existing list or library in a new way. To pursue this approach, click the Copy And Modify button in the Data Source Properties dialog box. This displays the Data Source Properties dialog box shown in Figure 10-17.

Figure 10-17. This figure shows both tabs in the Data Source Properties dialog box. The General tab provides identifying information, and the Source tab provides entry to detailed configuration.
Note Data Sources Aren t Lists or Libraries In the case of database, XML file, server-side script, and Web service data sources, it s fairly obvious that the data source is simply a pointer to the actual data.
Because Windows SharePoint Services always creates data sources when it creates lists or libraries, and because it uses the same name for both objects, the distinction may be less obvious. But in fact, the data source is only a pointer to its list or library.
Part 1: Part Title
Creating Data Sources and Data Views Initially, the Source tab will be selected. The Properties button displays the List Properties dialog box shown previously in Figure 10-2. The Fields, Filter, and Sort buttons display dialog boxes that specify which fields and which records the data source will provide, and in what order.
For more information on using the Fields, Filter, and Sort buttons, refer to the section titled Configuring Data Source Query Settings, which appears next in this chapter.
The Name field on the General tab of the Data Source Properties dialog box shows the name of the data source. The SharePoint List field on the Source tab shows which SharePoint list or library actually contains the data.
Data sources you create by using either Copy And Modify method don t appear as lists or libraries when Web visitors browse the site. They re strictly for use in development environments like FrontPage. Of course, the data is fully visible on any Web pages you create using the data source. The next chapter will explain how to do this.
Configuring Data Source Query Settings
For SharePoint lists, SharePoint libraries, and database connections, the Source tab of the Data Source Properties dialog box (shown previously in Figure 10-17) contains three buttons for configuring the fields, selection criteria, and sequence of the records the data source will deliver: Fields, Filter, and Sort. The next three sections will explain how to use these buttons. Field selection, filtering, and sorting aren t available for XML file, Server-Side Script, and XML Web Service data sources. These data sources have no query language like SQL that can perform these functions. Instead, you specify field selection, filtering, and sorting when you configure the Data View Web Part that displays the data
For information on selecting fields, filtering data, and sorting data in a Data View Web Part refer to Modifying List Views and Data Views, in 11.
