Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Inside Out If you wish, you can deploy scalable hosting mode across a farm of front-end Web servers and back-end database servers. This provides high availability and performance for hundreds or even thousands of small sites that otherwise couldn t afford redundant hardware support. Note Some documentation refers to scalable hosting mode as host header mode, or as multiple host names deployment. You can only specify scalable hosting mode when you create a new configuration database. After that, it applies to the entire server or server farm and remains in effect permanently. To create a configuration database that uses scalable hosting mode, you must use the stsadm.exe command-line program. The SharePoint Central Administration Web pages don t provide the necessary options.

Choosing a User Account Mode
When you install Windows SharePoint Services, you must choose a mode for working with user accounts. Windows SharePoint Services supports two user account modes:
Domain Account mode
Uses existing domain logon accounts; the same accounts that team members use for file sharing, print sharing, and other applications in a Windows domain. If a SharePoint site administrator tries to grant access to an account that doesn t exist, an error results. This mode is most common on intranets, where team members already have domain accounts. It presumes that team members will change their passwords when logging into those resources, and therefore provides no way for team members to change their passwords via Windows SharePoint Services.
Active Directory Account Creation mode
Uses Active Directory accounts located in an organizational unit reserved for this purpose, and which probably has no other privileges. This mode is most useful when most of the team members who will use a SharePoint server don t have and shouldn t have accounts on a local Windows domain. This occurs most frequently on public Internet sites. In addition, Active Directory Account Creation mode replaces the local account creation feature in SharePoint Team Services 1.0. If a site administrator displays the Add Users page and tries to authorize an account that doesn t exist, Windows SharePoint Services creates an account with the given name. It then sends the new team member an e-mail message that provides a temporary password and invites him or her to access the site.
Part V: Installing SharePoint at the Server
Planning and Installing Windows SharePoint Services Active Directory accounts created this way have no use other than accessing SharePoint sites. Therefore, team members on a site using Active Directory Account Creation mode can use the page _layouts/1033/password.aspx (relative to the root URL of any site) to change their password. If the site s locale is other than US English, replace 1033 with the site s locale ID.
Inside Out
13
Active Directory Account Creation mode isn t a self-registration system where Internet visitors provide an e-mail address, choose a password, receive validation mail and validate themselves. A site administrator must create each team member s account in advance.
The choice of user account mode affects the way Windows SharePoint Services creates the configuration database for your server or server farm. As a result: this step is part of initial installation.
You can t mix account modes in a single configuration database. Therefore, the

physical server or server farm must run entirely in Domain Account mode or entirely in Active Directory Account Creation mode. Before choosing Active Directory Account Creation mode, you should be aware of these restrictions: SharePoint Services must be a member server in an Active Directory domain.
