Creating Application Pool Accounts
In IIS 6, each virtual Web server runs in an application pool, and each application pool runs with a user account. The privileges of this account determine what the application pool, and therefore the virtual server, can do.
For more information about application pool accounts, refer to Choosing an IIS Application Pool Configuration, earlier in this chapter. 13
Application pools can run with either predefined or configurable accounts. A predefined account is one like Network Service that comes with the operating system. A configurable account is more secure, because you create it yourself and grant it only the permissions it needs.
Creating an Application Pool Account
13
Here s the procedure for creating a configurable application pool account for Windows SharePoint Services processes:
1 Log on to the domain controller console. 2 On the Windows Start menu, choose Programs, Administrative Tools, Active Directory Users And Computers. 3 Open the entry for your domain, right-click the Users Entry, and then choose New and User from the shortcut menus. 4 When the New Object User dialog box appears, specify at least a Last Name, Full Name, and User Logon Name. For example, set all of these to SharePoint_admin. 5 Click Next to display the second page of the wizard. Then: 5.1 Specify a password (twice) for the new account. 5.2 Select User Can t Change Password. 5.3 Select Password Never Expires. 6 Click Next and Finish to create the account.
The account must be a member of the Domain Users group, which is the default group for new accounts. For more information about creating an account on your domain controller, see the Windows Server 2003 Help system. Application pool accounts for Windows SharePoint Services require the Log On As A Service user right privileges on the front-end Web server. The next section explains how to configure this. The account also requires specific permissions on the database server.
13
For information on granting an application pool account privileges in SQL Server, refer to Granting Database Creation Rights in SQL Server, later in this chapter.

Granting the Log On As A Service User Right

Here s the procedure for granting the Log On As A Service user right to a domain account on a Windows Server 2003 computer:
1 Open a console session and log on to the Windows Server 2003 computer as an administrator. 2 From the Windows Start Menu, click Administrative Tools and then Local Security Policy. 3 When the Local Security Settings window appears, open Local Policies and select User Rights Assignment. 4 In the Policy listing that appears at the right, double-click Log On As A Service. 5 When the Log On As A Service Properties dialog box appears, click the Add User Or Group button. 6 When the Select Users, Computers, Or Groups dialog box appears, type the name of the domain account that an application pool will use, and then click OK. Figure 13-9 shows this operation in progress.
Figure 13-9. User accounts you assign to an application pool require the Log On As A Service right on the computer where the application pool runs.
Preparing Active Directory for Account Creation Mode
If you plan to run a SharePoint server in Active Directory Account Creation Mode, you ll need to create an active directory organizational unit where the accounts can reside, and delegate permissions for the application pool accounts to update it. The next two sections explain how to perform these tasks. 404
